The Deaf Gay & Lesbian Center E-News - SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT!
* * * A Gender Neutral Marriage Bill Passes in California's Senate & Assembly * * *
Last week, the California State Senate passed a bill by Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) -- AB849 -- that would allow gay and lesbian people to legally marry in this state. Last night, the State Assembly passed Leno's bill by 41 votes and sent it to Governor Schwarzenegger for his signature. This marks the first time a state legislative body has passed a bill legalizing gay marriage without any court action. The governor can now sign or veto the bill, or not sign it for a certain number of days, which will allow the
bill to become law. So, what you can do at this point is, let Governor Schwarzenegger know why he should allow AB849 become law. To do this, you can go to the governor's website at http://www.govmail.ca.gov/ and send a brief e-mail asking him to please support AB849.
