大好きなクリス・クリストファーソンの下記の曲の意味が
いまひとつ分かりません。
一番と二番では、

「カフェのウェイトレスさんが、
ちびっ子達にキャンディーを
安く売ってあげる。
そのやりとりを見ていたトラック運転手が
キャンディーの不足分をコーヒー代に
プラスして払ってあげる。」

そんな感じだと思うのですが、
サビ部分が直訳するとしっくりきません。
どなたかつながりの良い訳を教えて下さい。

"How much are them candies?" they asked her.
"How much have you got?" she replied.
"We've only a penny between us."

After the kids went outside.

And got up and nodded goodbye.
