The Global Greens calls on China Government to release Liu Xiaobo and other prisoners of conscience
10/10/2010 Tallinn, Estonia
The Global Greens calls on the government of the People's Republic of China to immediately release the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize Winner Liu Xiaobo and other prisoners of conscience, and take positive measures to further the democratization of China.
Liu, former professor of Beijing Normal University, was fired and served 20 months in prison due to his participation in the Tiananmen protests. From 1996 to 1999, he spent three years in a labor re-education camp for having called for sweeping political reforms and the release of imprisoned Tiananmen protesters. He was again arrested in December 2008 and sentenced to 11 years in prison in the charge of “inciting subversion of state power” for co-authoring Charter 08, a declaration calling for political reform and greater human right in China.
There are many other Chinese political dissidents who, like Liu, were harassed, detained or jailed by the Chinese government. In addition to sending the deepest congratulations to Mr. Liu, the Global Greens also urges the Chinese government to acknowledge the positive contribution of these democracy advocates, stop all repressive measures and instead take positive measures to further the democratization and human rights of China.
The Global Greens will invite and welcome Liu to speak at the Global Congress to be held at Dakar, Senegal in May 2012.
