It is difficult for me to watch movies on airplanes. However, it is sometimes a good way to make the time go faster. It is also a good chance to catch up on recent Hollywood films. On a recent trip from Narita to New York and back, I watched several films...
'The Island'
When I first heard the plot, I thought it might be a really good movie. However, it turned out to be a normal action movie. At least Scarlett Johanson was in it! I wouldn't recommend this film for studying English, just because the action is really easy to understand without paying attention to the words and dialog.
'Batman Returns'
It is darker than the other recent Batman films. For an action film, I thought it was pretty good. However, I still like the first Batman movie with Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson.
'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'
Of course, this film was much more beautiful when I watched it in the theatre. However, I really enjoyed watching it again on the plane. I think the dialog is great for studying English. Many of the jokes are really funny. In addition, it is a good chance to hear many different English accents (British, American, Germanic, Umpa-Lumpan, etc.)!
'Bruce Almighty'
This was a rather boring American comedy starring Jim Carrey. The main character has the chance to take over as 'God.' There were some VERY funny scenes. However, the movie was too routine and religious for my taste. I do think comedies like this are better for studying English than action movies.
Although the small screens on airplanes hurt my eyes, I usually watch one or two movies each way. I just wish 'International' flights had more 'International' movies!!!

As you know, I've been to NY, too.
And I watched "Island" and "Train Man (電車男)."
As for "Island," I totally agree with you.
Actually, I got too sleepy to keep watching it to the end...
"Train Man"... I watched it with English subtitles.
But this film uses a lot of 2ちゃんねる用語 (unique words created for the BBS "2 Channel"), which seems really really difficult to translate into English, so the movie's amusingness was decreased.
I think one of the good points about airplane movie is that you can watch a movie which has not yet been shown at theateres.
During my flight to NY on October 29th, I found "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" (with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie) in the list of movies to be played in the flight from NY to Narita. So I was looking forward to watch it.
But my flight was on November 4 and the the movies list was renewed...
Did you have a good trip? I flew on United, how about you? I wish I could have seen '電車男,' as I missed it in Japan. I think all of the films on my plane were American. They could have at least had one or two European or Asian films!
I agree with you about being able to see movies early in planes (at least for people living in Japan!). It gives me the ability to either recommend films or warn friends about them before they come out!
