Have any of you ever had to explain what 発泡酒 is to a non-Japanese person (I have never seen it outside of Japan)?
I recently had an Australian friend say to me, "This is really bad beer!" He showed me his can, and it was 発泡酒。I felt sorry for him. I told him that 発泡酒 is kind of like beer, but different.
What exactly is 発泡酒? Why is it so popular in Japan? Do any of you drink it?

発泡酒 is classified with Japanese Low about Alchol-Tax.
The low regulate that 発泡酒 is one of a kind of beer.But it use over 50% of sub materials (Rice,Korn-starch etc...).
And if you use not authorized as sub materials one, It will be also called 発泡酒.
And answer for your second Question that "Why is it so popular in Japan?"
The reason is Price! 発泡酒 is cheeper than Beer. You can buy some 350ml can of 発泡酒 about \140. It's AMAZING price! But these are really bad...

If less than 25% of malt is used , it is classified 発泡酒 ,not beer in japanese alchol tax law.
After bubble economy had brokedown(around1990),Japanese beer makers sold 発泡酒 which are more than1% and less than25% of malt is used,such as KIRIN TANREINAMA,SUNTRY HOPPS,ASAHI HON-NAMA
etc.
In addition to that , incase of malt is not used , alchol tax is decreased more.
Recently,instead of malt,soybeans,peas,etc are used to brew.
For example,SAPPORO DRAFT1,ASAHI SUPER DRAFT etc.
They are cheeper than malt included 発泡酒 and much cheeper than beer.

My opinin about the popularity of 発泡酒(sparkling liqueur? ...I don't know exact name in english, sorry.) is similar to the opinions above.
From the viewpoint of college student, beer costs me unbearable amount of money. If I had enough money, I will willingly choose "true" beer. 発泡酒 is merely a substitution at all for me. I'd rather brew "beer" by myself than taste disgusting 発泡酒 or その他の雑酒.

I understand how expensive real beer can be in Japan. Good alcohol takes a lot of my spending money! Until now, I didn't know if people liked 発泡酒 because of its taste, cost, or low-calories.
Because I can read most Japanese, I am able to understand when I read a can whether something is beer or not. However, many foreigners that are just visiting Japan or haven't lived here long, just grab the cheapest can in the beer section at the convenience store. Because they have bad experiences with 発泡酒, they think all Japanese 'beer' is bad-tasting.
