hi midge! welcome to this community. Sorry I have been so slow to write. What kind of art do you plan to study? よろしくね!
well you will know soon as i wrote that in the message i sent you. i hope more people will start talking as there are 6 of us now :D
Thanks for coming back! I hope more people join us. I like both modern and pre-modern art, however, I like modern/contemporary best because it comes from the society that we live in. I like Hockney very much (both his paintings and his photographs). As for impressionists, I really like Monet. My favorite contempory artist is Maurizio Cattelan. I look forward to hearing from you.

ahhh monet, i think my favourite is impressionism. hence i like monet too. lol. anyway, about hockney, i especially liked his twelve portraits of security guards. i really wish i could draw as lively as he could! i havent heard of Maurizio Cattelan. what type od artist is he/she??
Hiya.
I've just joined this community as I'm interested in both art and English.
I live in the UK at the moment and am trying to brush up my English. My dad is an artist ,so art has been familiar to me since I was a little child.
I especially like surrealism. Sometimes it is considered weird but they are really interesting for me.
I like photograph and contemporary art as well.
Anyway nice to see you guys and talk about art again.
Hi Annie, it's nice to meet you. Thanks for finding this community. I wish there was more people interested in talking about art in English.

Although I am mainly interested in contemporary art, I also like a lot of surrealism. I especially like Magritte's work. Do you have a favorite artist?

Let's chat more often. よろしく!

-Seth
Hi, Seth,

I like Hockney too. In a way, He is one to open the gate with photography as a conceptual, or designed vision. Do you like Chuck Close as well?

For Monet, I like his last years with the Lotus project. There was the first show in Boston in 1998, collecting the whole Lotus project all over the world. It was the best exhibition I have ever seen. I can't believe one person made such a humangas "cosmic" energy and atmosphere with painting.

I really don't know anything about Maurizio Cattelan.
If there is a good site to peek his talent, let me know please.
Hi yhiro,

We really have too much in common! My high school photography teacher in Seattle introduced me to Hockney's swimming pool photos. They really made a strong impression on me. They were one of the reasons I decided to study painting and printmaking in addition to photography at art school.

Until that time, I was mostly into 'pure' photographers (Adams, E. Weston, I. Cunningham, B. Weston, Cartier-Bresson, Stieglitz, Callahan, Evans, M. White, Atget etc.). Although I still love their work, it was hard for me to continue in that vein after discovering people like Hockney and Chuck Close.

Regarding Chuck Close, he is also from Seattle. As you can probably imagine, his impact on the local arts community has been huge. I was lucky to attend a series of lectures he gave at my art university in the late nineties. His large works help blur the line between photography, painting, collage, etc. They also comment on numerous 20th century 'styles' such as dada, photo-realism, abstract expressionism, etc. He is a groundbreaking artist!

I also love Monet's lotus paintings and other 'multiple works.' It is unfortunate that many people think he merely tried to make beautiful paintings. I think Monet was very photographic in that he was strongly interested in capturing subtle changes of light. He was also interested in the concept of time. This can be seen in how he painted the same scenes at differents times of the day and during different seasons. You were lucky to have seen the '98 show in Boston. I am a little jealous. However, I have been lucky to see a large number of multiple paintings at the Art Institute of Chicago.

I sure hope more people join us in this community!
Hello again,

By the way, is it Andy Wohol in the picture of the top page of this communuty? Whose artwork is it?
Am interested in collage as well. It looks like a stamp but really artistic.
