Today we introduce hand gestures! We hope this will help to explain some gestures that native speakers often use. Just like last week, we'll post our transcript later this week! Try to watch our video and understand just by listening first and then check your listening when we post our transcript!

Hi Sherry, thanks for posting! I'm glad you liked out intro and ending!!

I'm glad that you were able to learn a little bit about the 4th hand gesture. It's very hard to explain how we use it, but I'll discuss with Aaron and I think of a better way to explain it. Maybe we can explain it more in our next video. The best way to understand how to use is to think about what situations we use the hand gesture. It's easier to understand when to use it, rather then what it really means--after you understand when to use it, the meaning will become more easy to understand. It's just like the Japanese word "Bimyou." It took me a very long time to understand what "Bimyou" meant and it was difficult for Japanese people to explain it to me. But after I heard the word being used many many times, I learned how to use it and what it means--even though I can't explain it well either!! So the 4th hand gesture is like that.

Anyway, thanks again for posting and watching our videos!!
And now, for the transcript that you've all been waiting for!

Aaron: Hello everybody and welcome to Episode 13 of the Eikaiwa Video Club!

Kevin: How are all of you doing? Hopefully you're doing well. So, today we will talk about hand gestures.

So native speakers like us often use a lot of hand gestures and we use a lot of hand gestures because it helps us emphasize what we're trying to say.

Aaron: That's right. And today, we're going to teach you some hand gestures so you can emphasize what you're trying to say.

Kevin: That's right. So today we'll talk about 4 of them.

Aaron: This one:

Kevin: This one:

Aaron: This one:

Kevin: And this one:

Aaron: So the first one that we did, this, can mean two things--either "whatever," meaning "I don't care" or "I don't know."

Kevin: So the second one we introduced was this one. This one also has two meanings. The first meaning is "one or the other." So maybe we can go here or maybe we can go here, I'm not sure. So that's the second meaning. If you're not really sure you can use this as well.

Aaron: You might have noticed this one in the intro today. Essentially, this one means "Ah! I have an idea" or "I've got it!"

Kevin: The last one is a little difficult but we use it very often--it's this one. So when you see us do this it can mean a lot of things. For example, maybe we're tying to emphasize a word. For example, 'Today's word of the day is "elaborate."' Another reason we would use this is if we're trying to be ironic or sarcastic.

Aaron: Just so you know, the word "ironic" in Japanese is "hiniku"
So now let's have an example. Kevin and I are going to have conversation and use the things we just taught you.

Kevin: So Aaron, what should we do today?

Aaron: I don't know. Where should we go?

Kevin: Well, we could go to the movies or go shopping?

Aaron: Yeah...I don't know. Actually, I have an idea!

Kevin: What's that?

Aaron: How about we go to the dentist!

Kevin: Oh yeah Aaron, that'll be "real fun."

I hope that example helps to clafiy what we were talking about, but if not please send us a message and we'll answer your questions.

Aaron: That's right. We'll try to get to you as fast as we can.

Kevin: Well, that's all the time we have for today, I'm gonna go have that coke I just got.

Aaron: Oh, man....

Hi ハッチャン , it's nice hearing from you again.

Yes, it is not uncommon to see the 4th gesture in casual conversations. Of course, some people use it more than others and it's not used so much in business, or formal situations.

Personally, I use it regularly, as you can see in our videos--actually, I didn't even realize I had used it so much until I re-watched some of our old videos!!

In any case, I'm glad to hear that our video was useful and that you now know what the 4th gesture means.

See ya soon!
