2007 Inge Morath Award Winner Announced

For Immediate Release: The Inge Morath Award, 2007

The Inge Morath Foundation, in cooperation with Magnum Photos, is pleased to announce the winner of the 2007 Inge Morath Award. This year’s winner is Olivia Arthur of London, England, in support of her project “The Middle Distance,” documenting the lives of women along the border between Asia and Europe.

Arthur, who graduated from Oxford University in 2002 with an honors degree in mathematics, completed postgraduate work in photojournalism at the London College of Printing in 2003, and worked as a freelance photographer in India from 2004 – 06. Her project “The Middle Distance” grew out of Arthur’s encounters with women in India, and explores the geo-political borderline between Asia and Europe – from Turkey to Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Russia – for answers to the cultural divisions between East and West. “The project,” Arthur writes, “focuses particularly on young women, looking at a stage in life when they have to make decisions between education, work, and family.”

In addition to the Award winner, two finalists were named: Newsha Tavakolian, of Tehran, Iran, for her project “Iran: Girl Power!” and Rena Effendi, of Baku, Azerbaijan, for her project “Pipedreams: A Chronicle of Lives Along the Pipeline in Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkey.” Approximately 80 projects by young women artists from around the world were submitted for consideration. The winner and finalists were selected by the photographer members of Magnum Photos at their annual meeting in late June.

The Award was established by Magnum Photos in tribute to Inge Morath, an Austrian-born photographer who was associated with Magnum for almost fifty years, and who died in January, 2002. The annual Inge Morath award of $5,000 is given to a woman photographer under thirty years of age, to assist in the completion of a long term documentary project.

“The Inge Morath Award is unique in several key respects,” notes John Jacob, Inge Morath Foundation director. “Most importantly, it is the only Award among grants to artists that directly supports the work of young women photographers. It is also the only Award that carries the imprimatur of Magnum Photos, bringing great prestige to those selected as winners and finalists. In every case, their work has been extraordinary and the Inge Morath Foundation is pleased to have this opportunity to support them.”
