This topic is built for learning English expressinos from the commentators of baseball games broadcasted in North America as I noted in other topics before. The characteristic phrases by the commentators or technical expressions or terms on baseball are to be written here as they used to be in Gyu-beya BBS. I would like to introduce and comment on words or sentences that could be heard besides baseball as well. Please take part in this topic easily and enjoy yourselves.

The next batter would be 〜" との実況があるたびに、「「もし地球が滅びなければ」という気持ちが込められているんだろうな」という思いが脳裏に去来します。
<top of the eighth inning>
pitcher: Justin Masterson
batter : A.J. Pierzynski
■ "A.J. Pierzynski is not waiting around.
It goes opposite field in deep.
Bay back and it's off the wall.
Bay will play the carom.
Pierzynski in the second-base.
It's the second hit of the night.
It's a double to begin in the eighth."
> top of the fourth inning
> Adrian Gonzalez at bat
> runner on 1B (Luis Rodriguez)
■ "Full count
to Gonzalez
runner takes off
swing and miss
Kendall throw is up the line
wrong side of the bag
Kendall lets off a poor throw to second
and Rodriguez a stolen base,
although Adrian Gonzalez strikes out for the second out of the inning.
■ walk …
“a walk issued by C.J. Wilson”
“Matt Carpenter draws a walk.”
“Buchholz gets out of the jam.”
■ spectacular …
もうひとつ、同じような意味で、”a heck of a play !”
“The first homerun for Polanco to hit off the lefty this season.”
Top of 3rd (3回表)
“Toward the right, … and off the wall, … and hit hard off the top of the wall.
So Pederson will reach second-base with the double.”
“Kendrick groundball, … nice stop by Ramirez, … from his knees,
and he is safe!
Morse comes off the bag, … and two runs score.”
“And Morse is not arguing.”
“Aramis Ramirez rips one off the foot of Crayton Kershaw
with trying not to show any discomfort.”
■ “Just off the outside part of the plate” 「
Top of 9th (9回表)
■ “off the bench” 「代打」
“Now, Alex Guerrero will pinch hit.
Rookie Guerrero hitting two thirty-four.
As eight hits off the bench, three of them homeruns.”
少なくとも後半は”three of them are homeruns.”
“High drive base-hit for Francisco Cervelli off the bench.”
Top of 10th (10回表)
> The shortstop fired the ball to first base.
> (注意:first [second, third] baseにはtheを付けないのが普通)
> “Toward the right, … and off the wall, … and hit hard off the top of the wall.
> So Pederson will reach second-base with the double.”

■”a cup of coffee” 「コーヒー一杯の間(束の間の)のメジャー・リーガー」
“C.J.’s father, Chris is a former player, manages in the Tiger organization.
Pretty good player, hit 22 homeruns one year AA,
did his dad came up to the Angels as a cup of coffee, 15 at-bats.
His father was behind Wally Joyner in the tacking order.”
“ … his father, Steve Bedrosian.
He pitch 14 big league season.
His dad did, Atlanta, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Minnesota.
And back in 1987, Steve Bedrosian was the Cy Young Award winner with the Philadelphia Phillies.
So we have a chip off the old block.”
(2行目は”He pitched 14 big league seasons.”
我々の時代の”a chip off the old block”はChipper Jonesですね。
Commentator:
“People know that Chipper Jones is one of the greatest switch-hitters of all-time, hit 468 homeruns. But he also hit .300s both sides of the plate as a switch-hitter. I don’t think the other big time switch-hitters did that.”

“Talking about the September 1, we mention the Dodgers made their debuts on this day. How about the left-hand Japanese pitcher Masanori Murakami? He made his debut with the Giants in 1964, he’s only 20 years old. He was the first professional player from Japan to appear in the Majors.
I remember the story they talked about Murakami. Herman Franks was the manager of the Giants. And the Giant players told Murakami something that they told him was very good to say. And so Murakami was on the mound at his some trouble, and here comes Herman Franks out to the mound. Then Murakami further the direction with his buddies. And the only English he knew he said to Herman Franks at the manager made it to the mound “take a hike, Herman.” That was only English he knew. I never forgot hearing it now.
Masanori Murakami.
But remember after he made his debut the next thirty years no player from Japanese professional leagues appear in the Major League. You know last night 14 inning marathon the longest between the Giants and the Dodgers since a 15 inning game between the two teams in Candlestick Park. The game is famous for another reason. It was the debut of Dodger pitcher Hideo Nomo.”
