I have been driving quite a bit lately... and I've been thinking about when I was driving in Japan... I really like the flashing of the blinkers to say "thank you" when merging.... Americans usually wave, but hardly anyone does that anymore.... and no one seems to like to make eye contact with anyone... I wish people more of the blinker system.... and less of the "middle finger" system....
You're probably right; I hardly ever see people use the 4-way flashers to say thank you in the U.S. I do see some truckers do it, but it's nowhere as common as in Japan.
In fact, a lot of them don't even use the blinkers when changing lanes or making a turn. Now THAT pisses me off.
Waving is good until you realize that a lot of SUVs these days have extremely dark tinted rear windows, which makes your friendly waving (or even flip-off) totally invisible to the driver behind you...
Gosh I hate those fat-ass SUV' that take up space and waste gas. Is it a coincidence that a lot of SUV drivers talk on the cellphone while behind the wheel?
The Federal government should tax cars and trucks according to their weights.
I totally agree! How long did drivers survive without a car that size. I know some people had opposition to mini vans, but I haven't seen nothin like the SUV haters!
Ok after driving for quite a long time here in Washington, I rarely see people wave. Still I wave and give the finger when needed and the occasional honk when people get way too close. Even though I do want them to give me a little tap so I can force some money out of them and get new parts from them. However, I'm not looking for someone to smash into me, shoot, I don't want my baby totalled.
As for stop lights, if I'm already going to fast to stop, just run them, its better than getting stopped in the middle. And as for green lights with traffic in the front, I still wait at the intersection before going since I don't want to get stuck in the middle too.
Oh as for the SUV, since I'm a designer, they are still in High demand. You can thank the media for that. Big cars = Safe. I don't think we even can make the conversion right now, remember the where I come from bigger is always better. Dude, I roll on 24s on my tight ass Escalade Bitches!! I hate thoes people. However, i'd rather drive a car that gets at least 35mpg over 10mpg.
And no they aren't going to tax them either. They were acctually going to tax people by the mile which is a system that is still in debate. What you would do, is install a chip of some sort on your car. And as soon as you come in, you would pay certain amount of money depending how much you drove. Defeats the whole purpose of a Hybrid car. You could see this system with in the next 10 years.... Sad
But now a days everyone drives well they are eating, drinking, talking on a cell phone, or what not. Doing everything except driving...Even talking to the passenger I can't condone as safe driving habits...
I can't even count how many times I nearly got hit by some women or guy talking on the cell phone well driving... Good thing I have a Sports Car... I can swerve like no man....
SUV's? Bad? I dunno where you people live... But down in San Diego, SUV's are da shit... I'd take an SUV over a car any day.. (If I wasn't into performance Cars)
They are so... Convenient.. If I wana go surfing with 5 Friends.. What do you do? Strap the Boards on and everyone can fit into ONE SUV and well ur at it.. Hell Strap on 3 Bikes too... Well still having enough room for food and beer.. =] They are also fun to go Off-Roading in... And in San Diego, There are limit less places to do that.. Hell, Ya can even go on over to Mexico to go Off-Roading and Surfing too =]
It all depends on Necessity.. Not What you think is "Cool" or "Gas Conserving"... Besides, I’d rather be in a SUV and Crash then be in my Sports car and crash.. Haha…
I'm not saying SUVs are bad or not, its just popular image really. Now the question is how to make them more efficient without losing the power. Because yes they do come in handy for luggage space etc. However, the debate in the industry is that there will be a shift in fuels within a 20 year period. We already got cars running of methane aka, farts. And if you are going to say that the Ford Escape Hybrid is a Hybrid, its not. It only gets an additional 5MPG... It's just an engine that runs off of a different form of fuel, E85 which still breaks down to the same product that fossil fuels create, however, we don't have the supply nor the resources to keep everyone in the World, let alone the US run off of this for every vehicle. Besides it's the American Car Manufacture's way of getting BACK into the American market. Besides American cars are MORE profitable over seas, and hands down I'd rather take a European Ford over and American Ford.
Anyway, it all points to the same question, "how much are you willing to pay for gas?
>> SUV's? Bad? I dunno where you people live... But
>> down in San Diego, SUV's are da shit...
That's _the_ problem, dude. SUV is way too popular in the Seattle area, too, and let me tell ya, hardly any SUV drivers will ever take their gas-guzzling monsters off-road. It really pisses me off when I find a huge SUV occupying a "compact-only" parking spot in downtown Seattle, making it impossible to park next to it.
If they want to use SUVs just like cars, then SUVs should be subject to the exact same CAFE standards as the passenger cars. They are not now, thanks to the lobbying of the auto makers, and that's one of the big issues I have with SUVs. :*(
There you go... the traffic in and around Seattle is getting worse and worse. It sure wasn't like this when I first moved in - back in 1990.
One issue is that a lot of Seattleites still have this small-town mentality when Seattle and its suburbs have been growing rapidly over the last couple of decades. Waving the other car to go first at a 4-way stop even though it's your turn may be a "nice" thing to do in a small rural city, but not in places where tens of cars are waiting behind you. The same can be said about occupying the left (i.e. passing) lane. I always see a few cars "sitting" on the left lane on 5, 90 and 405, blocking a bunch of cars behind them. :(
U know what, I think there should be a tax cut on how many miles per gallon you get per car. Before I go on here is the conversion. 1 mile = 1.609 kilometers. Ok so currently we got a lot of cars that use up a lot of fuel just to go to certian places, I'm proposing we should give a tax break to those who own vehicles that produce lets say 25mpg. From there the higher the milage, the higher the cut. Thoes who fail to reach that get nothing in return. However, this does exclude vehilces that are for company use. ie. taxi's, trucking companies, etc. This would reward the average person to buy more efficient vehicles. what do you think?
Actually, we already have a system that works in a similar fashion in the U.S. The difference is that instead of rewarding those who have a fuel-efficient vehicle, the current regulation penalizes those who own a gas-guzzler. The worse the gas mileage is, the more you pay.
The main issue with this system is that it excludes the SUVs and minivans. That means someone who buys a sports car that gets 16/24 MPG has to pay $1,000 gas-guzzler tax, but someone who buys an SUV that gets 15/20 does not. I'd call bulls*** on that.
Haha good call on that one, I guess I haven't noticed since all the cars i've ever driven were getting 30mpg+. haha, ok, so ya, in that case, throw dem SUVs in there. Anyway, looks like i should read some more... meh...
