I'm Japanese, but I root for the U.S. It just feels natural for me after living here for more than 15 years.

Are you following the Games? What's your favourite sport? What do you think of the continuing problem with doping? Whatever else...

Now I'm tryin' to stay up to watch women's figure skating, but I'm dying...
Good night, I'm glad figure skating's on at this time slot, I get to go to sleep (_ _)zZZ...
"I hope they have consistent criteria in judging the artistic impression - or is it called the "program" category now? In my opinion, that's what separates top skaters from the rest of the crowd."

Same here - but it's also the most subjective part of it and I think that's still true. So I think there's still some danger of abuse of the system, but it's less than before.

"Irina Slutskaya can certainly jump, but she is very presentable on the ice, too."

The thing about Irina Slutskaya, though, is that she's an annoying, whiny jerk. When she doesn't win gold she complains about how she was "robbed", even when she stumbles or falls. Contrast that with Michelle Kwan, who really *was* robbed when she won the silver (I can't remember who beat her, but she was a victim of her skating slot and she out-skated the gold medal winner), but had only good things to say about it afterwards. So, it makes it hard for me to root for Slutskaya, however good she may be. She acts like that gold medal should just be handed to her in advance. It's almost a Cold War-era Soviet attitude.
I agree with you on Irina's attitude problem off the ice. Reminds me when she got the silver medal at the ISU Grand Prix Final. She complained that the judges were biased towards Mao Asada (the winner), though in my opinion Mao clearly performed better there.

Not that I root for Iriya, either. I just believe that she's the best female figure skater today, and that she's the gold medal favourite in Turin. I do hope Sasha Cohen gets the gold! :)
I am not usually interested in Olympics because it is too commercialized, but I found one player very respectful whose name is Joey Cheek. I wrote about him in my diary page.

Shame on Harvard!!
to be honest, i've only seen a bit of the snowboarding! where they have a race with 5 people or something. it looks like fun! we did similar on skateboards when we were young! also, i don't really care about country! i'm not a sports fan really
hari,

No kidding. Joey is the man. Compare his great attitude with that of Chad Hedrick!
Yeah, the other speed skaters who have won (Chad Hedrick and Shani Davis) definitely have some issues to resolve.
ピーター,

Shani Davis certainly blew his post-race interview with NBC, didn't he? I personally don't think he's as "bad" as Chad and some press want to portray him, but as an adult he could have handled the situation much better.
だいはど:

I know I explained a little bit already, but thought you might find this photo I took off my TV interesting. This is the actual interface that the judges use now to score figure skaters, and that's Kimmie Meissner's program. NBC has done a good job of explaining all of this. You can see on the left there is a list of elements with their baseline scores; the judges have these in advance so they know what to expect and how to score. Then depending on what they see, they either hit "basic mark" or they can do +1 or -1 or whatever.

They didn't explain this, but I'm guessing the stuff on the bottom is what goes into the "program composite" category - but I'm still not clear on how they actually score this.
I fell asleep, couldn't watch women's figure skating...(つд;)
I am watching the Olympics coverage on NBC now. A few skaters performed. Tracy Wilson showed the computer screen just like Jeff did above. Good thing you live on the East Coast - you get to watch the Olympics earlier! :)
Hi ジュリアン.

Well I know they used to be very good with Ice Dancing. In fact, France has gotten seven medals so far. Not bad, I'd say. :)

I just watched Sasha Cohen's short program. It was just superb. Her spiral sequence was as beautiful as it could ever be; her jumps were perfect. I've been her fan since the '02 Salt Lake games, and I'm very very glad to see her outskate everyone like that!
Man, what the hell is wrong with Team USA hockey? They're 15 minutes from getting knocked out at the quarterfinals.
Today is the day... Ladies Free Skating!

Sasha's turn is coming up soon. Go Sasha!
Okay, both Sasha and Irina screwed up... The gold medal went to Shizuka Arakawa of Japan!

It is the first gold medal for Japan in Figure Skating ever since the first Olympics, and the first since 1992 when Midori Ito won the silver in Albertville. Moreover, it is the very first medal for Japan at the Torino games!

Congratulations, Shizuka!
The first gold, medal for Japanese in this Winter-Olympic has Ms. Arawkawa got!

She made it!!

I am feeling moved by her superb performance. Thank you and goooood job!
Yeah, congrats to Arakawa, and hopefully this will take the pressure off the Japanese team in the press. Even as an American, I'm actually kind of happy that she won - I've already said why I don't like Irina Slutskaya, and I kind of felt like Sasha Cohen was getting a lot of basically undeserved attention (at least in the American press), almost by default after Michelle Kwan pulled out. She's never proven herself to be all that great... although I will say she's a pretty impressive performer. But she's not the whole package; where most skaters lack artistry and performance, she's lacking in technical skill (or at least consistency).

Arakawa seems to have it all, and I'm happy to see a skater win that deserves to win. Maybe this new judging system isn't so bad after all.

Pretty disappointing Olympics for Miki Ando, though, after all the hype she got.
Lack of consistency... that's what killed Sasha this time. If you look at her performance in the last few years, you'll know that she has been outstanding in the ISU Grand Prix series, owning most of the top 10 high scores (others go to Irina, of course). I don't want to look back and say shoulda, coulda, woulda, though. Tne end result is that Arakawa got the gold, and I'd say, she richly deserves it.
haha, Sasha and Irina CHOKED.

Ms. Arakawa worked hard and deserves the gold. Congrats to her!
>Today is the day... Ladies Free Skating!

>Sasha's turn is coming up soon. Go Sasha!

does anyone else think it's strange for a MAN to write this?
> "does anyone else think it's strange for a MAN to write this?"

How about "no"?

Are you saying you would rather watch men doing splits, sticking their butts out and spinning around with their legs up in the air?

Not that there's anything WRONG with that... I'm just saying.
whatever fag.

keep your homosexual fantasies in new york where they belong.
I'm so happy for the japanese lady who got gold. She was so calm, and determined. She really deserved it. I have been following the skating. My favorite was Irina Stutskaya - I like her personality. She is so strong. I'm american, by the way - but I just admired the Japanese and Russian skaters most.
Just saw Emily Hughes skate. She did a pretty good job. She's still 17; hopefully she will keep trying and make it to the next Winter Games in 2010. :)

Since Iam spanish and here never snows...im sorry but i have no idea about olympics..but congratulations to the japanese skater!!!
admit it.

Grown men who go ga-ga over figure skating are fucked in the head and/or were fucked in the arse by a close relative.

don't even try to deny such a self-evident truth.
ProdigalSon,

I know, I know... The latest word is that Arakawa's documentary DVD is selling like hot cakes in Japan because of her gold medal. Just breaks my heart - it could have been Sasha :*(
not sure it's best since we no longer live in the brokeback mountain but i hear you. i just requested the super for his removal.
i was so glad to know that ARAKAWA got the gold medal! she did a really good job!! i am proud of her as the Olympic player and she graduated from my college too! i really like her. i wish i could be the girl who can contribute sth so nice to my country and college in the future.
anyway let us cerebrate her :)
Arakawa truly deserved the gold, as she skated absolutely beautifully. I was breathtaken by her performance -- and I'm not really into figure skating at all.

Cohen did OK, but I don't think she deserved the silver. Slutskaya did OK, also. I think she deserved the silver more than Cohen. However, Cohen got really good after her mistakes, almost like a fire lit inside of her.

As for the other Japanese skaters, Suguri (? I forgot her name) did a pretty good job. Miki Ando was a joke.

Still... nothing beats the Chinese couple who won the silver last week. The girl fell during a jump, and injured herself -- they had to stop skating. After a little bit, they decided to continue on. So... they did... and they were excellent. So excellent that they ended up winning the silver.
Being a big Sasha fan, I must agree that her performence wasn't nearly as good as it could've been. Two failed jumps should cost you dearly, especially when the competition is so fierce. One thing Sasha needs to work on is consistency. I still hope she comes back strong and aims at the gold at the next Winter games in Vancouver.

I have no idea why Miki Ando is so popular in Japan. Granted she used to be able to hit quads pretty consistently, she now can't even do triples well. Compared with Arakawa and Suguri, Ando leaves a lot to be desired.
I think the young girl who couldn't make the Japanese Olympic team will do pretty well. Mao Asada. I think if she was able to perform in the Olympics, she would have done pretty well. Maybe even done better that Ms. Arakawa.

I'm not really a fan of Sasha at all. I like Michelle Kwan. However, her day has passed. She was good -- the most decorated figure skater EVER -- but, I think it's time for her to retire at the ripe ol' age of 25.
Well, Ando is the 2004 & 2005 National Champ in Japan. Plus, she's young and pretty. That never hurts in building the fan support... haha.

A funny article about her in the 毎日 Daily News...

http://mdn.mainichi-msn.co.jp/waiwai/face/news/20060210p2g00m0dm013000c.html
Haha tabloids.

Hockey final goes tomorrow, a Scandinavian showdown. Finland vs Sweden. Should be a great, intense game.
Mao Asada - she's been such a sensation, hasn't she? I still remember how thrilled I was when I watched her performance for the first time at the Cup of China last fall. AFAIK, she's the only female skater that can do a triple axel *consistently* today.

Asada will definitely be a top medal contender in Vancouver if she is able to brush up on her artistry and keep her technical skills intact.
And congratulations to Apolo Anton Ohno for winning his first "true" gold medal today. :)
