☆ENGLISH ONLY☆コミュのQuestion: Domestic travel

Hiya,

I was about to pose the same question to a few other message boards (in Japanese), but figured I would try my luck here instead, as I think this "forum" is a pretty nice community resource.

I've been living in Japan for quite some time, and have seen much of what this fine nation has to offer, travelwise; thus when I ask, "So what should I see?" and people say, "Kyoto! Kamakura! Tokyo!" I smile and ask whether they've any other suggestions. (And I've done the Fuji experience five times so far.)

So: any other seasoned travelers here? Where might you recommend? The only remaining things on my list of things to see are Shiretoko, Iriomote-jima, Hashima/Gunkanjima, and maybe venture to Shikoku.

You should go to Kanazawa....but I'm a ninja so I
would say that. Sorry, the Ninja temple....which
isn't really a ninja temple is in Kanazawa.
Well, that was quick!

Great suggestions! Trouble is (and I'm such a bitch, aren't I) I've already done the whole Kanazawa thing about 3 years ago, good times; Tripadvisor is somewhat plain, but Japan Guide helped me remember I wanted to visit Yudanaka Onsen. Not for me, but for the monkeys.

I honestly don't know what I am looking to do, however; I want to do something "new" and "interesting," but those are pretty ambiguous concepts, hey? ;-) I guess that after the first 5 years, I pretty much did everything I had in mind--and had gotten into the whole photography and goshuin thing in order to give me some sort of direction. I also tried getting into the Japanese "top 50" sorts of things-- like the top 50 waterfalls, the top 50 lighthouses--and unfortunately, many places are rather inaccessible to those without a car or bike. Poo. (I reckon I would rent a car if a place was worth it enough.) I also had a look at quite an array of older Japanese wood block prints to get ideas of places to go, and perhaps revisit through a photographic update a some-hundred-something years later, and had a look at other photographers of Japan of years gone by, to get an idea of what they'd seen and done. Trouble is, I've run out of inspiration--and when I started looking at Japanese guidebooks, well... there's only so far that shopping, eating, and onsen really takes ya...
Cheers, M-- actually, those had been on my list; but I had lived in Gifu for about 16 months; Takayama is...well, charming in its own way; Shirekawa-go was awesome for scenery, especially in winter (yes, bit trite--but well worth for scenery). Gero is pretty decent as well. Gifu City is pretty awesome in summer--especially for the fire festival.. (I took quite a few photos of that one! wicked fun.)
How about Rishiri and Rebun islands?
They are small islands. But seafoods of there is very delicious. And the flowers are very beautiful in June to August.

Shikoku is a good idea, I suppose. Do you know Ohenro-san ; visiting 88 temples in Shikoku? It takes about 2 weeks, if you drive or attend an Ohenro tour.
There are attractive cities and sights in Shikoku. Matuyama/Ehime Pref. is famous for its hotspa. Kazura bridge is a supension bridge built with ivy. Sanuki udon in Kagawa Pref. is reasonable and tastes good. At the two capes in Kouchi Pref , you can see the Pacific ocean and eat Katsuo-no-tataki;Bonito. You can see whirling current at Naruto in Tokushima Pref.
well I recommend Yakushima!! there is a massive nature.the natural envirinment of the island is left untouched. you can enjoy hiking, swimming and if you are luckey, you can see turtles laying eggs on the beach.I was impressd by them. but this place is so far from your place.. its in south of Kagoshima. you have to take a ferry or plane to go to the island. if you have a time, Kyusyu area is good for sightseen even im japanese. the food is good there. spa is also awesome.
I recommend Kamikoochi(Nagano pref.)
Thats very bautyful!

And the Ontake mountain!
It is about 2800metersわーい(嬉しい顔)ぴかぴか(新しい)
Just like another world指でOK
I wonder if maybe the way you're travelling isn't the real issue.
You seem to be checking things off a list. Try travelling by
motorbike....or if that's no good buy a bicycle. A few years ago
an Australian guy walked from the Sea of Japan to Tokyo. That's
a big commitment but there are plenty of Japanese who do
shorter walks around the place. Go to historical sites like Sekigahara.

I don't really know what you want. I thought you were after happy
snaps. If you're after something else, you need to work out what it
is.
Have you tried Kibi in Okayama(?) prefecture?

There are cycling paths everywhere and you can see lots of old temples, shrines and ancient tombes in beautiful rice fields.

Hida-Takayama and Shirakawago are also beautiful. Traditional houses in the mountains.

If you are interested in beaches and sea, Okinawa (Kerama islands and other islands) is great. The culture is not really Japanese. More like Vietnamese.
Well first I'll mention the obvious,
Hiroshima - A-Bomb museum (+ REAL okonomiyaki and yakisoba, not that imitation stuff in Osaka...)
Hyogo - Himeji castle
Sendai - cow's tongue (sounds gross in English doesn't it?)
Sapporo - Sapporo Beer Garden (they'll bring you another glass before you're even done with the current one! By far the best beer I've had in Japan)
Hokkaido - Shiretoko (one of the World's Heritage spots, and arguably the best nature spot in Japan)
Nagano - the Alps, Wasabi farm, and Matsumoto castle
Aomori - Osorezan (you might get mixed reviews on this place)
Shiga - Lake Biwa
Just a few of the places I've been and recommend.

Yeah....quite spot on, Ian: truth is, I really have no idea what I want to see. I'd actually seen most of the places people have mentioned so far in my first year here. And each weekend from 7 years ago, I go someplace I haven't been. I'd thought of the motorcycle thing, but have no idea how to ride one--so I bought an origami bike instead, so I could take it with me on the train and hop off somewhere neat and have a look around. I love the quiet coastal towns, and have been to quite a few places where caucasians are still a rather rare thing (and where kids say "Konnichi-wa, gaikokujinsan" and bow to ya with a smile--which always brings tears to my eyes, because it's so much more respect than the "harro" shotgunattack).
But rather core to the issue: what is it that I want? Well, for one: Somewhere that is purely tranquil. Shiretoko sounds quite like one such place, and I aim to go there sometime. And some of the faraway islands that few people frequent. And somewhere with heaps of moss--that isn't in Kyoto.
Anyhow, thanks everyone...
If you go to Shiretoko, I recommend you to go in Winter, Sea Ice (Ryuhyo) season.
Sunset to iced ocean is soooooooooo amazing...
After seeing that, you pick up some ice on the ocean and go back to your hotel, and take a "Wiskey on the Ryuhyo"ワイングラス
I like some of these answers. I've never heard of some of these places and would be interested in going.
Is there a way to 'bookmark' a thread so that I can come back later and get this useful information? Summer vacation is approaching. Yahoo!

Kyoto as a prefecture doesn't consist of kyoto city only. When you go up to north, there might be what you want.
Like in this thread everyone speaks based on his/her own experience (me, too). It can work sometimes and sometimes not. Better find by yourself your own place, that would get you more affection for your findings. What counts is NOT where you go, but what you do and how you feel.
