☆ENGLISH ONLY☆コミュのRant- smoking in the US (esp. NYC)

Mayor Bloomberg (a former co-worker and former occasional drinking buddy) passed a law a while ago that essentially forbids smoking in bars (along with other places, but I agree with those places). So unless you are a prviaet club, you cannot smoke at the bar. But smoking outside is perfectly OK. This does not make sense. You can't go to a bar and smoke, but outside you can smoke to your hearts content. Its OK to pollute everyone's air, but not OK to smoke in a bar where people might expect it. IS it better if you are walking your little kid down the street, only to be accosted by the stink of cigarettes, killing the tiny alveoli in the kid's lungs. Better take your kid inside to a bar, where it is smoke free! I for one think that the smokiness of a bar is part of the experience, along with the drunk idiots and the "drink until they are cute" girls....

Bloomberg is a former smoker.

Whenever I get back to NY, I always have problems, since I always like to have a fat smelly cigar with my drink. I can only go to private clubs or the Macanudo bar (the place sucks).

Tokyo has it right. Chiyoda-ku banned outdoor smoking.

hey there,

yeah I'm a heavy smoker, and I'm totally Japanized in that I expect that I can smoke in restaurants, bars, etc.
I can see why people want to outlaw it, cigarettes especially - but in the words of some dude from some movie I saw once "I have an addiction man"

I think us smokers would find a happy home in N.Korea or Spain, the last bastions of no holds barred smoking.
Totally unrelated but cool thing I just want to put out there : when I was in Spain a long time ago they had an ash tray either side of the metal detectors!

Genius

Quick note for non-smoking activist types. Which is more of a threat do you think ;

1) people smoking in a bar
2) people driving at 70 m.p.h down a highway in a tin can full of explosive petro-chemicals?

so in conclusion.......ummm

yeah

bye
↑sorry....those metal detectors were in an airport.

I killed my own joke

long day

bit scattered

yeah

ok

bye then
I personally believe smoking should be banned inside and outside except in the privacy of your own home. I agree with Cohiba about the stupidity of allowing smoking on the street. Washington State just passed an initiative that now prohibits smoking within 25 feet of the entrances and windows of restaurants, bars, etc., as well as inside them. That's a step in the right direction, IMO.
I agree about allowing smoking in the street - it makes no sense. But honestly, as an American, I get pretty disgusted sometimes by the level of smoking in Japan. I do think it's a better idea to restrict it outside than in bars, but I also think it's a good idea to restrict it in apartment buildings, in offices, in restaurants, and anywhere else that you have to share the same air with other people. And I don't mean just having "smoking sections", I mean it shouldn't be allowed at all.

I make an exception for bars because I mean, come on, that's *why* people go to bars, so they can relax and do these things that they otherwise can't do in a public but semi-restricted area where nobody's gonna bother them. You go to a bar and you know what you're getting into. I think smoking should be allowed there.

But generally, I'm in favor of most smoking restrictions... and Japan should have more of them. Nobody's got a right to take my health away from me by blowing smoke in my face all day.
Here in Melbourne, they thinking about phasing out smoking in all bars and pubs as well which is bloody ridiculous....I tell you half the pubs in town are going to close down and you are gonna get plenty of wankers geting pissed out in the street and causing grief...

I mean...people that drink at bars and stuff usually smoke as well...and yes..there even losers like social smokers...if you can't take the smoke...then mate...the cafe is just across the road...

what about my rights to suck tar if i want to...
I'm a former smoker and living in Ca. In Ca, you can-
not smoke in public area, so I'm used to it. I have a
hard time when I go back to Japan because people are smoking everywhere. Sometimes, it gets to the point I
want to through a backet of water to those people. But I used to smoke, so I understand smoker side of feeling too.

Well, my opinion is inside of buildings should be non-
smoking, but outside should be free to smoke.
i'm a chain smoker n' even if i'm not, i think it's no problem in bar or pub otherwise who wil go there? no one! means unemployees will appaear. imagine about it. but i disaree smoking in the street though i alweays do.

to be honest smoking in japan is an issue. vending machines of cigarrete shouldn't be existed any more as well as alcohol though i bought them as well. too free, there is no discipline that i hate.

anyway hope no-smoke free. just care about around u when u smoke
the problem with smoking in the bar is that the employees will eventually sue the bar when they get cancer from secondhand smoke.

I think that^s the reason for the ban. It^s more to protect businesses than to protect people.

As a non-smoker I^d rather smoking be banned on the street. I can choose whether I go to a bar with smokers, but I can^t do anything about waiting for a train or something
Geez. I thought Arkansas was bad, but that is even worse. We cannot smoke in resteraunts or bars that serve more food than liquor.

Have you watched the last episode of Bill Maher?? He said people who drink should have to go drink outside in the cold and see how they like it! hahahaha Anyway, I thought it was a good segment.
well, what do you think of this??? in the uk, they have just changed the law so bars and clubs can stay open and sell alcohol 24 hours a day!!! it used to be that you could only buy alcohol between 10.00am and 11.00pm, unles it's a club and that would be until 4.00am (if the club had a licence). they are also making a new law in the uk which will prevent smoking in all bars/pubs/clubs/restaraunts!! this is crazy!!! now you can drink as much as you want!! when you feel like it!! but you will not be able to smoke!!! i'm glad i'm not going to be in england for much longer!!!!!!! i know that i can only drink a certain amount before i feel sick and dizzy, so 24 hour drinking isn't really all that great an idea, but i do like to have a smoke when i go out!!!! this is total madness!!!! it's comment knowledge that most of the violent crime commited in the uk is because of people being drunk. i never heard of somone walking in the street trying to fight someone because of smoking too much!!!!
