I have two passions in life Film and Japan I am 19 years old. Right now I am going to Film school in Hollywood. I will Graduate in October of this year. So I want to move to Japan to learn Japanese in November. I am majoring in editing and cinematography so i will have editing experience and the ability to run cameras, set up lights ect. I was wondering how difficult it would be for me to get into the film industry in Japan because my dream would be to live in japan my whole life. Also with editing and cinematography,i can make music videos or PV's so maybe that is easier then film. Thanks -MIKE-
The only job you can probably get in the film
industry would be to appear in a beer commercial
where you will have to make exaggerated expressions
while shouting "subarashii! and jumping around like
a jack-ass.
Seriously though, getting involved in any part of
the film or video industry in Japan - apart from
being an "actor" - is pretty difficult.
I think its probably very difficult, even with fluent Japanese, but the more people there are like you, the greater the chances of some change coming about in the industry. Itll be quite a challengebut go for it!
why don't you start from a small production company and take it from there?
production may not be something you want to do. but you will meet people and
can do networking.
i am in print production. no experience in film. but i know people.
there are companies that hire bi-lingual. keep in mind that you need to be able to communicate in japanese if you're serious about working here.
there's definitely hope but again, language is going to be the major problem.
and... working in media industry in japan is very very tough; i mean, physically.
people here DO work 24 seven. they don't sleep.
anyhow, good luck! if you have any questions, email me.
