I was walking around in the grocery store today and say an octopus tenticle for sale. I was disgusted at first, but then got a little curious. I think i'm going to go ahead and buy it.

Does anyone know how to cook octopus? I've never tasted it before. And I'm a beginner cook. Does anyone have a recipe for cooked octopus? There's no way in hell i'm eating it raw.

depends what are making. it will be very tough so u need to cut it into small cubes. Takoyaki is the obvious choice, but tako okonomiyaki would work too. You could try deep frying for karaage-tako, thats a yummy one.
Takomeshi (rice cooked with octopus) is nice, and is easily prepared in a standard rice cooker.

I like my tako raw (a tako carpaccio is nice if you can get fresh octopus) or just lightly boiled and then marinated.

As Ewok says, you can't go wrong with tako karaage which goes great with beer.

Octopus can also be used in pretty much any recipe which calls for squid or other seafood.

If you can give us an indication of what kind of cooking is up your street, maybe some of us will pitch in with some recipes.
I think the most popular octopus dish is Sunomono. First you scrub the octopus with salt, and get rid off the stickiness. After that, wash and boile it. Then slice the boiled octopus and mix with Tosazu(a kind of vineger), a bit of wasabi, and sliced cucumber.
well, this is what i know. First put it in boiling water i don't know how long, maybe till the meat turns white. In other words, till it's completely boiled.

Then cut it any way you like so it's easy to chew. Eat it with shoyu and the like as you like. That's all. It tastes good.
It's like アキラ@今 said, but a bit arraged...
Just cut it as you like, or buy some pre-cutted one, boil it with some soy sauce , ginger and .... whatever you like.

So simple, and tastes wonderful.

Here's another suggestion.
If you wanna know how it tastes, why don't you try Takoyaki first?
Wow.
I took a look at your profile.
You are from Oak town!
I live in Oakland now.

Anyway, why don't you try the octopus that's already made from the store or some, first?

And if you go to Korean restaurant, you will find some Octopus dishes.
i just caught a big one ACCIDENTALLY yesterday.
of course i let it go back into the ocean, its not my target ;)

well, most of the octopi for sale r cooked to a degree.
the tentacles u saw at the grocery must be cooked (boiled) as well.

an easy one...
1. the octopus tentacles, slice
2. an onion and tomatoes, slice
3. put all together with lettuce in a bowl
4. shake vinegar-based dressing on the bowl

there u go!!
If it's really fresh, you can slice up the
tenticle into rings and then dip them in
batter. Tempura is pretty good but I tend
to go for beer batter. Just get a can of
flat beer, mix it into plain flour add a
pinch of salt. Dip the octupus rings and
deep fry. Maybe for 2 minutes in very hot
oil.
I think it gets tough when it's not fresh.
Hello all. Thanks for all of your suggestions. I'll go to the Korean grocery store and see if they have tosazu. If they do, i'll do that recipe. If they don't i'll deep fry it. Whatever I do, i'll let you all know how it comes out (hopefully not back out my mouth). I don't think I will be able to eat it raw or just boiled. I still have a little trouble eating sushi. lol. I'm getting better though. It just takes practice.

Again, thanks a lot.
Tosazu is a Japanese product, not Korean. If you don't know any Japanese store, you can substitute other vineger for Tosazu. Then I recommend to add a bit of salt and lime instead of wasabi.
Anyway raw octopus smells bad, so you should scrub it well with salt before you cook. Good luck!
Yeah, but Korean store carry Tosazu.

I live closer to Korean store, so when I need to get some Japanese stuff, I go to Korean store instead.
I went to the Korean store and they gave me this stuff. The only english on it says, "Seasoning sauce for small octopus." Ingredients: Red pepper paste, Soy bean sauce. The rest is Korean. The woman at the store didn't know enough english to help me out. And the fish I got at the grocery store was fresh-water pre-cooked. So I guess I will just fry it in this sauce...?

I think I am being pretty damn brave here. Although I might have my roommate try it first.

今夜章魚を料理します。
my bad. not fresh-water. i don't know why I typed that.

I think there is always a level of bravery
when eating Korean food. They like things
hot. I once ate Kimchi that was so hot it
made me throw up.
Not as hot as Indonesian food though. My closest
friend is Indonesian and when she makes Rendang
she makes one for me and her children, and
one for everyone else. I once tried the Rendang
for the grown ups and I kid you not I had maybe
4 or 5 spoons before I couldn't go on. After
that I must have drunk 4 or 5 litres of water
and it was still burning.
There's many ways to cook raw Octopus, but they all pretty much have the same preparation:

1) Cut out the gut, mouth and eyes out.
2) Rub the octopus with salt to get the sliminess out of it.
3) Put the octopus in a boiling salt water for about 6-8 minutes.

Key point is to get the slim from its skin out.
Anyways, good luck with your cooking.
Hi i am song from Korea.
Octopus is also popular food among koreans.
We can make many type of food with it.
One of the receipy that i recommend, using Kochujang, which is famouse korean chilli sauce.
if you have a question, i will give you specific information about how to cook octopus ^^
You cut the legs of octopus and roast them on a skewer with whatever sauce you like on it (my preference is soy). This is a dish called authentic Tako Yaki.

For body part, chop them into small pieces and heat them up on a pan. While octopus meat is heating up, you grate the cheese. Flip meat around a bunch.
Dump the seasoning, which comes with "Ortega Kit" all over the meat. Mix and flip the meat around to distribute the seasoning evenly. Place some shells in the kit on a plate and prepare to add sauce. Apply a scoop of meat cocked in the pan. Now you have real "Tako".

Bon appetite.
ey... you can just boil it until its legs get white,
and cut it and eat them all with mayonnaise. enjoy!
I wrote a journal about my experience making the octopus. I also put up pictures. I tried writing it in Japanese, so you may not get much information from the text.

Thanks for all your help and insight.
