Sparks reveal plans for film based on their musical The Seduction Of Ingmar Bergman
In an interview with Michael Silverblatt on his acclaimed KCRW radio show ‘Bookworm’, Ron and Russell Mael revealed that the award winning Canadian film director Guy Maddin is working with Sparks on the film realisation of their recent audio musical ‘The Seduction Of Ingmar Bergman’ aided by Jason Schwartzman.
The interview reveals that Silverblatt, who has known Maddin since he was a teenager, gave a copy of the musical to Maddin who loved the material and, it turned out, is a fan of the band.
“I am a big fan of Guy’s films…he really is one of the best film makers in the world now. I was stunned when I first saw his films” declared Ron Mael in the interview.
With Maddin on board as director, he and the Los Angeles brothers are now in the process of seeking funding for the film. One of the people helping with this process is ‘Rushmore’ and ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. The World’ actor Jason Schwartzman “he has been a real ally and is a big fan of Sparks and Guy Maddin” said Russell.
Ron and Russell were on the ‘Bookworm’ show to reveal the show’s new theme tunes written and performed by Sparks. ‘I Am A Bookworm’ will replace ‘You are a Human Animal’ which has been the show’s opening theme for 21 years. The programme will also close with a second Sparks composition ‘Where Would We Be Without Books?’.

‘The Seduction Of Ingmar Bergman’ was originally commissioned as a radio musical by Swedish Radio and was subsequently released as an audio recording to many 5 star reviews and effusive plaudits.
“Funny, tragic, frightening and thoughtful, all at once…..sharply scripted…scored with scrupulous intelligence. It may well turn out to be the pinnacle of Sparks’ career” The Independent
“the marriage of music and lyrics is flawless” Wire
“a genuinely exciting piece of music…..awe-inspiring” The Word Magazine

Sparks to perform at the Los Angeles Film Festival
Posted On: May 3rd 2011
We are delighted to announce that Sparks will be performing The Seduction Of Ingmar Bergman at the Los Angeles Film Festival.
The performance will take place on June 25th at the Ford Amphitheatre.
Originally commissioned by Swedish National Radio in 2009, this groundbreaking musical will be presented for the first time in a live setting in what might best be described as a "film-to-be" form. Acclaimed Canadian filmmaker Guy Maddin, who will direct the final feature film, will be onstage giving stage and cinematic directions throughout the performance, as the cast ― including famed Finnish actor Peter Franzen as Ingmar Bergman, Ann Magnuson as Greta Garbo, and of course Russell and Ron Mael ― performs the musical in its entirety. Projections have been created by production designer Galen Johnson to foreshadow the mood and atmosphere of the final film.

On June 25th Sparks will be performing, for the first time, their acclaimed musical The Seduction of Ingmar Bergman.
In 1956 Ingmar Bergman's Smiles Of A Summer Night won the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Poetic Humor. In this unique musical from the acclaimed Los Angeles band Sparks, a conflicted Ingmar Bergman, having recently returned home from the French Riviera, is inexplicably transported from his native Sweden to Los Angeles during the heyday of the '50s Hollywood studio system. Originally commissioned for Swedish National Radio in 2009 and subsequently released as a box set, The Seduction of Ingmar Bergman was hailed as "a bold, major work. . .compelling and fascinating" by The Guardian, while also landing on numerous top ten lists, including in the Village Voice and the Los Angeles Times.
Drawing on Sparks' plans for a feature film version of their musical, The Seduction of Ingmar Bergman will be presented for the first time in a live setting as what might best be described as a "film-to-be." Canadian filmmaker Guy Maddin will be onstage, giving stage and cinematic directions throughout the performance, as the cast―including famed Finnish actor Peter Franzen as Ingmar Bergman, Ann Magnuson as Greta Garbo, and Sparks' Ron and Russell Mael―performs the musical in its entirety. Meanwhile, projections created by production designer Galen Johnson will foreshadow the mood and atmosphere of Maddin's finished film during this special live presentation of Spark's tale of art, temptation and the lure of big breasts and bigger budgets.
