苦学楽学　[英語一日一習]コミュの"Who do you think you are?" (どこの何様のつもりか！ )

先に、“I think” を取り上げましたが、今回取り上げるのは、”do you think ?” です。

「・・・であると思いますか」なら、”Do you think …..” でよいのですが、「あなたは自分のことを何様だと思っているの」は、”Who do you think you are?” であって、”Do you think who you are?” は間違いです。

このように、”think” の目的語が疑問詞節であるときは、その疑問詞をセンテンスの冒頭に出します。

 Where do you think she has gone?
 What do you think he is?
 Who/Whom do you think this letter is for?
 Which do you think is taller, Jane or Mary?

なお、”Who do you think you are?” は、「どこの何様のつもりか」という日本語の捨てせりふと見合いです。

また、”know”はこのように、疑問詞を前に出すことをしません。”Where do you
know she has gone?” とは通常言いません。 ”Do you know where she has
gone?”です。この質問には、イエスかノーだけで答えてもよいということになりますかね。
