I've noticed an interesting and somewhat confusing coincidence lately in various slang uses of the word "deuce". "Deuce", of course, is the English adaptation of the French word for the number 2, deux, and the word deuce has most often traditionally been associated with playing cards referring to the twos in the deck. Recently, however, the word has been making its way into common slang in two primary ways with vastly disparate meanings. In the first case the word is used to mean "I am leaving." In this case one would say simply "Deuces." or one could say "I'm 'bout ta deuce" to mean "I will be leaving soon." This usage of the word is derived from the popularity of using the peace sign as a wave when making an exit. As the peace sign consists of two fingers on each hand, or two twos, the plural is used, "Deuces!" The other common usage I've noticed recently is as a synonym for the word "shit" Most commonly used in the phrase, "I'm going to go drop a deuce" to mean, "I am going to make a bowel movement." This usage is derived from the American tendency to identify urination with the number one and defecation with the number two. This can be very confusing and it isn't always easy to tell the difference unless you pay close attention to the conversation. So listen up and hopefully no one will mistake the toilet for the exit.
