Hi everyone, Since I came to the U.S., I've heard or read the word "hook up" many times. But the meaning is still vague to me, and that make me confusing. Please help me out!!
私は「hook up」を、状況に応じてor前後の文脈によって理解していました。
辞書で調べると、「〜を(配線等を)接続する」等々でしたが、
someone hook up with someone.
someone hook someone up with someone.
などという使い方が頻繁にされていたので、
「〜を(主に異性を)紹介する」や「〜と関係をもつ」みたいに解釈していました。あとは文脈次第だと思います。
どうでしょうか。
Hook up doesn't always refer to sex. You can hook up with someone for a date, or you can hook up with someone for sex. You can hook up with friends to go somewhere. English is all about context. It's difficult, I know, but keep trying!
yeah... out of context, the first idea is, it's a quick
romance with no promises made. but it's just slang, it
just means "connect." So if you're on the phone you can
say things like "yeah so let's hook up at like six" to
plan to meet someone. however, if you got confused, you
might not want to experiment with it so freely, or, um,
people might expect something by mistake... (^^)
As I said before, English is all context. If said in the proper context one can say anything and it can be interpreted to mean anything. It isn't right to apply concrete definitions to slang because slang can be used in many many ways and hold very different meanings everytime.
My advice, pay very very close attention to exactly what the conversation is really about. If it's about sex, then if you say " I hooked up with Ken" then it means you had sex with him. If you are talking about a friend, and you say "Oh I hooked up with Yuki" that just means you met and did something. Etc. Etc.
Good luck, it's very difficult to get used to the versatility of English.
