"Super Yosakoi 2006" in Harajuku/Omote-sando
(August 26-27)

I felt that it is the counterpart of "St. Patrick's Day" in the U.S.
In the U.S., Irish community has grown and grown. Then every American celebrate Irish special day and love Irish herritage.

Yosakoi is similar to that, I think. Originally Yosakoi is originated in Kochi Pref. (Shikoku Region) and it was only a regional and local entertainment. But now many Japanese loves dance from small area far away from Tokyo.

Yosakoi has been accepting Western music such as rock and jazz-fusion. A long ago, it was just like typical Bon-dance, but it changed dramatically and got sophisticated. And people can dance freely and actively. That's also might be the reason why Yosakoi has spreaded nationwide.

原宿・表参道周辺で開催

遠い昔に、本場高知の商店街で見たよさこい踊り。人口８０万人余りの小さな県の文化が、大東京を席巻している様を見て、僕は
アメリカの「セント・パトリック・デー」を思い出しました。
セント・パトリック・デーは元来アイルランド人固有の記念日でしたが、アメリカに移住したアイルランド人の子孫たちに受け継がれ、アイルランド系社会の広がりとともに、アメリカ全土に広がりました。それに「よさこい」が似ているな、と思ったのです。
よさこい踊りは、昔は典型的な盆踊りのように、やぐらを囲んでただ踊るような素朴なものだったようです。しかし、ロックやジャズフュージョンの要素などを取り入れ、衣装もカラフルになり、鳴子さえ持てば何をどう踊っても良い（という印象を受けました）、そんな自由さとアクティブさがウケたのでしょう。今や
洗練された、スタイリッシュなダンスとなりました。

・・・見ていてハタと気がついた。
「なんか、一世風靡セピアに似てなくない？？」
彼らのスタイルは、限りなくよさこいに近いです。鳴子を持っているか持っていないかだけの違いです。

原宿、表参道、青山、中学生の頃から大人になるいまだに落ち着く街。お散歩最高のエリア。住んでいるくらい頻繁に出没してました。最近は他も見てますが落ち着くのはやはりここ。I feel at home in Aoyama, Harajuku, Omotesando area I smile naturally when I get there. 自然と笑顔になれる街。
