Purpose
The WYD08 Environmental Sustainability Strategy is designed to assist the implementation of a clear set of guidelines in relation to WYD 2008's approach to environmental sustainability. Its purpose is to ensure WYD 2008 minimises any adverse environmental impacts WYD08 has on the environment.
Preservation of God's creation
WYD 2008 is currently in discussions with a number of expert organisations concerning environmental sustainability and the impact WYD08 may have on the environment. WYD 2008 anticipates launching a sustainability strategy that addresses environmental issues.
WYD 2008 will work with a number of existing Catholic agencies and stakeholders that are already committed to sustainability and the preservation of the environment and can provide assistance and specialist expertise in this regard.
Objective of the Strategy
The ultimate objective of WYD 2008 is to minimise the environmental impact it has on Sydney and Australia as much as possible and create a sustainable management infrastructure to support this objective.
This Environmental Sustainability Strategy will be developed through active consultation and in close conjunction with Church Groups and Catholic stakeholders, event planners, government representatives and expert environmental advisors.
Practicalities
In establishing this Strategy, WYD 2008 is in the process of developing and implementing a path towards sustainability which aims to:
* Employ experts to advise WYD 2008 on how to best manage its environmental sustainability efforts. * Undertake a review of major WYD08 event sites with consideration of environmental and waste management impacts. * Work with corporate partners and suppliers who share a likeminded approach to environmental sustainability and advocate its protection, utilising their expertise in minimising the environmental impact on Sydney. * Commit to purchasing and using environmental friendly products and services such as recycable products. * Leverage the wealth of pre-existing experience and knowledge of previous WYD hosts. Continue their legacy in implementing environmental sustainable policies by also developing WYD 2008's own unique sustainability legacy. * Build awareness of WYD 2008's environmental sustainability aims and engage key Church stakeholder groups, such as Catholic Earth Care, Diocesan Youth Ministry Committee representatives and WYD 2008 employees. * Adopt sustainability strategies that take into account the planning, implementation and follow up phases of the event, including the provision of environmentally friendly products to Pilgrims, through to the management of waste after the event. * Encourage dioceses nationally to place some focus on the beauty and fragility of local environments and responsible stewardship which could take place during the Days in the Dioceses. * Assess WYD 2008's activities and requirements in staging the event including: * Transport * Catering * Water * Power * Inclusions in Pilgrim packs * Youth Festival * Accommodation * Communication materials * Identify ways in which WYD 2008 staff can contribute more to sustainability.
WYD 2008 is committed to minimising the environmental impact it has on Sydney and Australia as much as possible - watch this page for further updates regarding our sustainability plans.
