いやいや、時よ、わたしが変わりゆくとしても、勝ち誇るべきではない、
新たな権力によって建てられたその尖塔も
わたしにはまったく目新しくはなく、新奇でもない
それらは過去の光景の新たな装いにすぎない、
われわれの寿命は短い、それゆえ
時が昔のものを押し付ける手口に驚いてしまう
われわれは以前にそれらを耳にしたと思うよりは
自分たちが新たに作ったと思いたがる、
時が記録した歴史と時自身のいずれにもわたしは挑む
現在の出来事にも過去の出来事にも惑わされることはない
なぜならその歴史もわれわれの目にする光景も
多かれ少なかれ時の絶え間のない性急さによるものだからだ、
誓って言うが、時の大鎌と時自身があるにせよ
わたしは誠実であり、ずっとそうあり続けるだろう。

Thy pyramids built up with newer might
To me are nothing novel, nothing strange;
They are but dressings of a former sight.
Our dates are brief, and therefore we admire
What thou dost foist upon us that is old;
And rather make them born to our desire
Than think that we before have heard them told.
Thy registers and thee I both defy,
Not wondering at the present nor the past,
For thy records and what we see doth lie,
Made more or less by thy continual haste.
This I do vow and this shall ever be;
I will be true despite thy scythe and thee.
