Tatiana Tarasova. "Taking step forward is not enough. We need a push"

Summer is the behind the curtains time for the skaters. The music is picked and the programs are choreographed but we can only guess how the programs would come out. Obviously, the upcoming season won't be very easy for Russian team. Olympic champions Evgeni Plushenko, Tatiana Totmianina/Maxim Marinin, Tatiana Navka/Roman Kostomarov, and two-time World Champion Irina Slutskaya took the time-out and won't appear in the eligible competition for at least a year.

"SE" correspondent asked Tatiana Tarasova, coach-consultant for team Russia, to talk about current events in skating.

- I know you've spent almost entrie summer in Novogorsk, at the Olympic training camp. Share you impressions with us. What can we expects in the next Olympic cycle. The fans worry.

It's good that they worry for us. I can admit - I didn't expect that work tempo. We developed a very large program to scout the skaters in Russia. Almost all coaches, including me, participated. We enjoyed consulting anyone who asked and helped as much as we could, choreographing programs and picking music. Just imagine, all the best choreographers were involved in working with junior team. Several test skates were held in Novogorsk for junior ice dancers and singles. It helped us understand how the things are going in each event.

- And?

Lena Kustarova and Svetlana Alekseeva work very well in ice dance. We can see the work of Ira Zhuk and Sasha Svinin. One of Kustarova's team is absolutely ready to contend for the highest placements at Jr. Worlds.

- Why are you not naming the skaters?

I do it on purpose. I think, at this stage, the work of coaches is much more important for us.

- We already talked about this with you after the Torino. Many noticed Russian team #3, Jana Khokhlova and Sergei Novitski, who were coached by Zhuk and Svinin.

I visited practices of Ira and Sasha's group. I like how they built the work. Juniors are training with seniors and it noticeable affects their growth. Khokholova/Novitski improved even more. They have interesting programs and clean elements. I am happy to see it. I like the feeling that my help was of benefit to someone. To be honest, after the Games, I hoped to finaly rest for the practices and work less. Now it happens that there is undescribable amount of work that needs to be done. And it's drags me in.

- Are you still consulting the singles?

Everyone who asks for my help. I can say that the situation in men skating is very promising. It's better than in ladies'. This is understandable - there are always certain problems with girls when they start growing. You need to have a very serious experience to lead them to a certain result. I'm especially pleased that there is a good girl in Elena Chaikovskaya and Vladimir Kotin's group. Zhanna Gromova, Elena Vodorezova, Viktor Kudriavtsev, Natalia Dubinskaya have good guys. Like I said, the most joyful fact is that all this work is set for the future results and now all of it had really came together.

All the best experts who judge the competitions attended the training camp and test skates in Novogorsk. Everything was evaluated and analyzed - the elements, the levels.

The data was entered into the computer right away, processed and discussed. In other words, judges not only checked on skaters and coaches, they check on themselves. It was very interesting to have a chance to look at your work in this angle, getting consultations on any question at the same time.

Valentin Piseev personally came to the rink and was there from early morning to late night. He talked to the coaches and discussed problems with skaters so he would know what help they need. We really tried not to miss even one person or one detail. I think we managed to do that. In any case, I can't imagine we could've done more for reaching the results that Russian fans are used to as soon as possible

- Still, this year will not be easy for the team, maybe even the failing year. Right?

Let's be sincere. For many years, there was always sort of a "second shift" behind us, the best coaches in the country. And we had it in our groups too. The second pair, the second skater. We don't have the bench now, and that's why we are doing everything we can so we can not only take a step forward, so we can push. All the effort is thrown for it, and I think we'll do it.

- There were plenty of interviews with the champions after the Torino where all of them sort of hinted that they will stay in the competition if they would get a more solid financial support. What do you think, maybe it would've been worth it to try finding personal sponsors for the stars and talk the stars into staying?

I am sincerely grateful to our Olympic champions for pulling through at the Olympics. I think they have the right to do anything they want now and nobody has the right give them any advice. In any case, it won't hurt any of them to rest. They'll recover in a year and make the decision. If a person still feels strong enough to perform and compete, it's unlikely he would just leave the sport. At the same time, I'm very glad that Masha Petrova and Alexei Tikhonov staid. I personally asked them to stay. This is the highest level team and I think with them staying, we are getting chance to grow young teams much faster.

- Is that true that Alexander Zhulin is returning to Russia and planning to continue coaching?

Yes. And that's not only his desire. Our skating federation is interested in that. I think Sasha will be given all working conditions he needs, but there is no final decision which rink he would go to. He is not just the young coach. He already coached the Olympic champions. It's a completely different level. RFSF has plans to try bring those who work abroad back to Russia. It won't be done fast. People can't just come and live at the railroad station. Many of them have foreign studetns. Zhenia Platov is now coaching British ice dancers, brother and sister Kerr.

- What about several new generation coaches - Evgeni Platov, Artur Dmitriev, Oksana Kazakova, agreeing to participate in long term TV Show. Aren't you afraid that it'll negatively affect their day jobs?

This is a very interesting projects and it pays well. Skaters don't have the easy life financially, so why would they decline the invite? As far as I know, participating in the project doesn't stop from coaching. Some people temporarily started working late nights.

As for the show, I think it's much more interesting for the TV viewers than watching "Star Academy" or endless action movies where 800 people are killed every minute and you can't figure out what's going on. Famous people figure skating - this is at least fun. And it makes to respect the skater's work more - you can see that it's not easy even going from one board to another on ice.

- Do you plan to go to big events this season?

Definetely for Russian events. As for the internationals, I didn't think about it yet. Maybe I'll go to the very first one, but I think I'm more needed here, and personal coaches should go abroad with their skaters.
