The first time I saw Ozawa Seiji (小澤征爾) live was in 1992 at the MET, when he conducted Eugene Oregin, with Mirella Freni, Nicolai Ghiaurov, Jerry Hadley, Sergei Leiferkus (debut) et al.
Later, I saw him many times at Saito Kinen Festival in Matsumoto, Japan. He wasn’t among my favorite opera conductors, but I am grateful to him for conducting operas that had not been performed a lot in Japan back then, such as Dialogues des carmelites, Peter Grimes, Jenufa, etc.
He conducted Les Contes d’Hoffmann for DG, in which Edita Gruberova sang the three heroines. However, she did not see him or Placido Domingo (Hoffmann) during its recording, and that was a major reason why she decided to set up her own recording label Nightingale, so that she would not have to play by the major labels’ rules.
