BIOGRAPHY
Yoshimitsu Umekawa (1976-) is a Japanese photographer born in Tokyo.
In 1998, he served as assistant to Irina Ionesco (French female photographer) in her workshop in Japan, which was what lead him to go to Paris to study more about photography. While in Paris, he was highly praised for his works by Jeanloup Sieff. Since returning to Japan in 1999, he then has worked extensively for culture magazines, CDs, advertisements and exhibitions as a freelance photographer.
He has photographed a number of domestic and international musicians such as Daft Punk, Missy Elliott and Senor Coconut. He also does art/photo directions for CDs as well as PV directions. His photography has a reputation for his unique lighting, black-themed composition and the usage of deep and vivid colors. His representative work is a series of [FANCY HEAD] which features underground culture scenes in Tokyo.
The theme of his recent works includes Yokai (Japanese monsters) and new religions in the world.

梅川良満---写真家。1976年、東京生まれ。
1998年、フランスの女流写真家 Irina Ionesco (イリナ・イオネスコ)の日本でのワークショップにて撮影助手を務めた事をきっかけに、同年フランスへ渡る。この時、Jeanloup Sieff (ジャンルー・シーフ)に出会い、作品を高く評価される。1999年、帰国。以後、フリーランスとしてカルチャー誌、CD、広告、展覧会等を中心に幅広く活動。
DAFT PUNK、Missy Elliott、Senor Coconutなど、国内外のミュージシャンを数多く撮影する中、CDのアートディレクター、フォトディレクター、PV監督なども手掛けるようになる。彼独特の光源の使い方や黒を基調とした画面構成、深くビビッドな色彩には定評がある。代表作に東京のアンダーグラウンドなカルチャーシーンを撮影したシリーズ「FANCY HEAD」がある。近年取り組んでいるテーマは、日本全国の妖怪、世界の新興宗教。
