ツボカビ症は、ツボカビの一種（Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis）によって引き起こされる両生類の致死的な感染症である。ツボカビ症は、北米西部・中米・南米・オーストラリア東部で劇的な両生類の減少あるいは絶滅を引き起こしてきた。野生の個体群でのこの疾病に対する効果的な対策は存在しない。この病気は世界的な両生類の生息数と、世界の両生類種の30％もの種数の減少に関連している[1]。
減少のうちいくらかはこの菌によるものと信じられているが、感染に抵抗している種もあり、またいくつかの個体群が感染が低レベルで持続して生き延びていることも報告されている。[2]。加えて研究室での研究のほとんどは生態学的には適切ではなく、野外にその結論をそのまま持ち込むのは困難ではある。
ツボカビ感染の最初の報告は Xenopus 属のアフリカツメガエルのものであった。アフリカツメガエルは世界中に広く輸出されていたので、それが B. dendrobatidis の一時的な媒介者であろう。しかし他の研究では B. dendrobatidis が何十年も前から北米と中米に存在していたとされている。
研究室での調査では、この菌は高温ではあまり活動しないと判っており[3]、また感染したカエルを高温に晒せば菌を殺せるという[4]。このことからなぜツボカビ症がまず冷涼な地域から発生したのかが説明できるだろう。
[編集] 日本におけるツボカビ症
2006年12月、国内で飼育されているカエルからこの菌が検出され、それを受けて2007年1月12日に研究機関・環境団体など16の団体による緊急事態宣言が発表された。 現在のところ野外での発症は報告されていないが、今後の展開が憂慮されている。
