I personally try my hardest not to talk on my cellphone while I'm driving. When I have to, I will pull over if possible. Yes, it is still worse than putting away your cellphone in your bag.

What's your take on this?

When I see another driver talking on his/her cell while driving, I tend to keep distance from that car. When I drive, I occasionally talk on my cell, but only when I'm driving on a highway with light traffic. Once the traffic gets bad, I don't even pick up the phone when it rings.

The danger is not necessarily limited to cell phone use while driving, though. Anything that can take away your attention can potentially be dangerous. Like eating and drinking, adjusting your audio system, or reading newspaper (!) while driving can all take your attention away from the road. (The "reading the paper" bit is not a joke, by the way. An old colleague of mine did that once.)
I hate people who talk on their cellphone while driving. I have *almost* gotten into an accident several times recently, and it's always been by a stupid person who has been talking on their cellphone and not paying attention to the road.

So I get really obnoxious -- I have my "Cellphone Mix CD" that I keep in my car, which is the most god-awful hardcore thrash metal that I could find, and if the road is a multi-lane, I pull up right beside the idiot and I turn the music up as loud as I can and then I just linger next to the person.

I don't do it if the person looks tough, or on the freeway. Because, well, I value my life.

But I think cellphones should be banned while driving because people act like complete idiots.
Yeah, people are already so distracted while they're driving that the cellphone element just makes it worst... the police ought to crack down more on the worst offenders: soccer moms in their huge SUVs with one hand on the wheel and the other on their stupid phone. Geez, drive safer, lady! You got kids in the car. O_o
I always change the cell phone mode into the driving mode while driving. Actually, one of my sons has been hit by a car, the driver of which was talking on her cell phone. Fortunately, he didn't get any serious injuries at that time.
They have headsets that give hands-free phone use.. $40 for good ones. Definitely worth the price if you are on the phone a lot. I use a cell phone very occasionally and I'm always on the freeway when I use it.. and compared to places like Seattle or L.A., I'm sure it's always light traffic. They may not be perfectly safe, but hands free use with VOX (Voice Operated Transmission/Relay), can even eliminate your having to press a button to begin speaking or use voice dial on a cell phone.

So, perhaps not all cell phone users have to be burned at the stake for calling and driving at the same time. :)
Hi again,

According to the paper, it is not necessarily the case that taking on
hands-free phones(cell phones with headsets) is safe.
The paper said, "Those who are talking on hands-free phones tend
not to concentrate on their driving and tend to be absorbed in talking"
..... if my memory serves me right.

I personally think that convenience and danger are two sides of the
same coin in many cases.
I am sure there are people who _can_ handle driving and talking on the cellphone reasonably well, but we cannot assume everyone is like that when we talk about traffic laws. Yes, banning it would mean less freedom, and nobody likes to have their freedoms taken away. OTOH, it is a matter of public satefy, which is IMO more important than personal freedoms when the two cause conflict.
