World Cup refs were told to target 'cheating' Crouch
Last updated at 08:28am on 5th September 2007
Peter Crouch has been branded a cheat by FIFA.
And football's world governing body even instructed its referees to punish him for fouling.
The amazing revelation has come from England's former top official Graham Poll.
Poll claimed that, before last summer's World Cup finals in Germany, FIFA refereeing chiefs singled out England's 6ft 7in striker and told officials to crack down on him.
Crouch is suspended for Saturday's crunch Euro 2008 qualifier with Israel, having picked up two cautions in just five international matches this season.
The difference between that figure and his record for Liverpool is marked ? he received only two yellow cards in 49 appearances last term ? and Poll may have provided a reason why.
He said: "At the World Cup last year, we were shown videos of England games.
"The head of refereeing at FIFA said, 'Look at this big fella Crouch. He's a real pain and getting away with too much. We need to mark him as a player we need to look out for'.
"We watched England's warm-up games and it was pointed out the way he used his arms. I tried to defend him, being English."
But Poll's words went unheeded as Crouch was booked against Paraguay and consistently cited for fouling during the tournament.
Poll's revelation will stun the FA, who may now believe referees were instructed to penalise the England team before a ball was even kicked.
The ex-Premier League ref from Tring admitted officials can be influenced by the guidelines given to them by their bosses.
Speaking on Radio Five Live, Poll added: "You have to ask yourself as a ref if you are looking out for him all the time or only when he has done something that draws your attention.
"To prepare is fine but to pre-judge is not. And, low and behold, Crouch did get booked in Germany.
"He has been picking up cautions since and is out of Saturday's match.
"Players need to be aware that referees individually, or as a referee's team, can be tactical as well."
Graham Poll氏は実際、困ったちゃん審判の代表だったとは言え、よくぞ言ってくれたという感じです。
Former referee Graham Poll says officials at last summer's World Cup were encouraged by Fifa to "look out for" England striker Peter Crouch.
Crouch, 26, is banned for the Euro 2008 qualifier against Israel on Saturday and Poll says that is no surprise.
He told BBC 5live: "Fifa's head of refereeing said, 'look at Crouch, he's a pain and he gets away with a lot. We need to mark him out and look for him'.
"We were shown videos of him. I tried to defend him, being English."
Poll added: "Before last year's tournament in Germany, we watched England's warm-up games.
"We had been out there for two or three weeks before, and it was pointed out the way he used his arms.
"Now, Crouch has been picking up cautions in qualifying and is out of Saturday's match."
Recalled Wigan striker Emile Heskey could be set to partner Michael Owen in Crouch's absence on Saturday.
Crouch will be available when England take on Russia in another crucial Euro 2008 qualifier next Wednesday.
Peter Crouch, who is promoting a new football video game, tells us with concern that he has tried it out successfully but, unfortunately, only against Craig Bellamy, his former Liverpool teammate. “It’s incredible,” the gangly striker says. “Craig doesn't just shout at the ref on the pitch, he shouts at the telly as well.”
Crouch’s robot back in the rotation
Liverpool striker Peter Crouch says he will revive his robotic goal celebrations if his club win the Premier League or he scores a ‘really big goal’ in the Champions League. He would no doubt have done the same had he scored at Euro 2008 next summer. We should, perhaps, be grateful for small mercies
LANKY Peter Crouch has become an unlikely sex symbol on networking website Facebook.
Fans of the 6ft 7in England star set up a group devoted to him called Crouch Is A Sex God.
The thrilled Liverpool ace said: 的’ve never been classed as that before. I’d certainly like to meet these people. I’m sure they’re all very attractive./p>
Crouch is already spoken for ? he dates model Abbey Clancy, 21, who is currently starring in ITV1’s Hell’s Kitchen.
The striker, 26, also revealed he is planning to follow in the footsteps of Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard by writing his autobiography.
He said: 的’d like to do one. My story’s different to players who have played at the highest level all their lives.
的’ve played for Dulwich Hamlet in the non-leagues and in Sweden.
的’ve seen a lot of sides of football and it gives me perspective on how lucky I am to play for Liverpool and England./p>
Crouch also reckons his club team-mates should grow goatee beards like their boss Rafa Benitez.
He said: 典hey should bring them back. The whole Liverpool team should have them. The manager’s started it off with his little goatee./p>
Crouchy can't wait
06 August 2010
After the intense environment of the World Cup, Peter Crouch is eagerly looking forward to sampling the kind of atmosphere with which White Hart Lane will greet the Champions League.
And, now that the qualifying draw has been made and has paired us with Young Boys, our England international striker is certain that the way N17 will celebrate European football will again be something special.
"I'm excited to be back into it again and the added challenge of Champions League football really adds to that feeling, particularly as we're coming off the back of a good season that got us there in the first place," says Crouchy whose winning goal at Eastlands was decisive in our advance.
"We're all keen to get started, to build on what we have achieved already at Tottenham. We've got to ensure that we get through the play-off first, of course, but I've been lucky enough to play in the Champions League before and it really is the best competition, featuring the best players in the world.
"I can't wait. I just know the atmosphere at White Hart Lane is going to be fantastic."
