CROUCH BLASTS BACK
EXCLUSIVE LIVERPOOL v TOTTENHAM TODAY, KICK-OFF 3PM CROUCH BLASTS BACK
By Simon Mullock 07/10/2007
Peter Crouch has spent his career proving his critics wrong.
And he has vowed he will win his biggest battle yet by showing he has a long-term future under Rafa Benitez at Anfield.
At 6ft 7in, the England international does not conform to the stereotypical footballer and his journey to Anfield via QPR, Portsmouth, Aston Villa, Norwich and Southampton has not been an easy one.
But Crouch is aggrieved by suggestions that Benitez now questions whether can score enough goals at the highest level to justify a starting place alongside £25million new boy Fernando Torres.
And his mood turns to anger at the claims that Benitez's rotation policy has caused a rift between striker and manager.
Crouch said: "I am like any footballer, I want to play as many matches as possible and of course I am disappointed when I'm not in the team.
"But for people to suggest I have a problem with how Rafa Benitez manages Liverpool just isn't true.
"Rafa has told me I don't have to prove myself to him. He doesn't want me to try to do things that aren't normally a part of my game, he just wants me to concentrate on doing the things that made him bring me to Liverpool in the first place.
"Over the course of the season I believe I'll get enough chances to show what I am capable of and I will be part of a successful team at Liverpool.
"It seems like I have had questions asked about me all the way through my career - and I've found that the best place to answer them is in front of goal. Now I am playing for a high-profile club like Liverpool and I am an England international, the spotlight is on me more than ever.
"But I'd like to remind people that last year the manager brought Dirk Kuyt and Craig Bellamy and we also had Robbie Fowler.
"There were questionmarks over my role and how many goals I would score - yet I ended up being Liverpool's top goalscorer and I felt I had a great season.
"Just because the names have changed, the challenge I have remains the same - to prove that the people who doubt me are wrong."
"Liverpool are going places and like every other player I am excited by the prospect that this might be our year to mount a challenge for the title.
"But it is going to be a tough game against Spurs. They have had an indifferent start to the campaign and that will hurt all of their players."

Benitez loses his patience as he tries to cash in on defiant Crouch
By JOE BERNSTEIN -Last updated at 22:12pm on 6th October 2007
Rafa Benitez is heading for a major fall-out with Peter Crouch as he tries to force the England striker out of Anfield in the January transfer window.
The Liverpool manager has decided to cash in on Crouch as soon as possible after confirming that he has a £20 million budget to spend on new players in the new year.
But the player, who has 18 months left on his contract, is determined to stay put until the summer unless he gets the right move for his future.
Benitez's patience with his centre-forward has finally snapped after Crouch's lacklustre performance in the 1-0 midweek defeat by Marseille and he is unlikely to play against Tottenham today.
The manager is irritated by the player's attitude towards his rotation system and his refusal to sign a new deal which would boost his resale value to the club.
Not only that, Crouch is looking for his first goal of the season after netting 24 times for club and country last season. Juventus,Real Madrid, Manchester City and Portsmouth are all interested in the 6ft 7in striker but he is prepared to wait until the summer to weigh up his options, particularly as he would be ineligible to play in the Champions League for another team this season.
Benitez, who has seen his side score just once in five Premier and Champions League games since hammering Derby 6-0, is ready to bring in new blood and Jon Arne Riise is also on the for-sale list.
The Anfield manager said: "We've been working on buying new players since the beginning of September. We do not have problems in the financial area because we have sold a lot of players. We have around 35m euros (£20.7m)."
Liverpool would get back the £7m they paid for Crouch if they sold him in January but the fee would drop as his contract started to run down.
Benitez admitted he was on the warpath following the Marseille debacle.
"We were really bad as a team so the staff and I and the players had to be together. I was really disappointed. And I was angry. But you cannot change anything by being angry. You need to analyse."
Crouch scored in Liverpool's Champions League win this week
Manchester City could target Peter Crouch after Blues chairman Thaksin Shinawatra revealed manager Sven-Goran Eriksson was a fan of the striker.
Crouch wants a regular starting berth at Liverpool
Liverpool striker Peter Crouch says he will decide on his future at the end of the season.
The club have offered the 27-year old a new contract, but he believes he needs to be playing regularly.
Crouch said: "I'll have to look at it at the end of the season. Now I'm concentrating on winning something.
"I've got to be realistic, if I want to have any aspirations of playing for England, or furthering my career, then I have to be playing."
Crouch bagged Liverpool's goal in the 1-1 draw against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, and despite not being able to win a regular starting place, maintains he is happy at the club.
He said: "I'd love to stay, it's a fantastic club and I love everything about it, but I've got to be realistic."
Reds manager Rafa Benitez says the offer of a new contract is a sign the club do value the striker and the Spaniard believes he will stay.
He said: "I have confidence he will sign. The player wants to.
"At the moment, we are playing with only one striker, but we can play with two. It is not a problem.
"I know he is happy here and that he wants to play. But that is football. We have offered the contract and we need to wait."
Crouch has scored nine goals in 33 appearances for the Anfield outfit this season.
Peter Crouch has agreed personal terms with Pompey over his switch from Liverpool.
The two clubs have agreed an undisclosed fee for the 27-year-old England international, who spent nine months at Pompey in 2001/2.
Crouch is due at Fratton Park in the next 48 hours for a medical before completing the deal.
The striker first joined Pompey from QPR in the summer of 2001, scoring 19 goals in 39 appearances.
He left the Blues for Aston Villa before being loaned to Norwich, who he helped win the First Division championship.
Crouch returned to the south coast in the summer of 2004 to sign for Southampton, where he scored 16 goals in 33 appearances.
Those goals were not enough to save Southampton from relegation, however, and in July 2005, Crouch completed a £7m switch to Champions League winners Liverpool.
In his second season at Anfield he was the club’s top scorer with 18 goals.
Crouch has FA Cup and FA Community Shield winners’ medal and FIFA World Club Championship and UEFA Champions League runners-up medals from his time with Liverpool.
He has also scored 14 goals in 27 England appearances, including a hat-trick against Jamaica in 2006. He represented England at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, scoring the opening goal in the 2-0 victory against Trinidad & Tobago.

Crouch is on the verge of returning to Fratton Park
Liverpool striker Peter Crouch has agreed personal terms with Portsmouth and will complete his move upon passing a medical within the next 48 hours.
It is believed the 27-year-old England international striker will cost Portsmouth about 11m.
Crouch is set to link up with Pompey again six years after leaving, and will work with boss Harry Redknapp for the third time in his career.
"Crouch is a terrific player, top class," Redknapp told BBC Radio Solent.
The Liverpool striker was also praised for his contribution to the Merseyside club by Reds manager Rafael Benitez.
"He is a good professional and we would have wanted him to stay," he said.
"We offered him a new contract. But sometimes you have to understand the player. He wanted to play a lot more."
The Spaniard added: "With Fernando Torres now first choice, that [playing more] was always going to be difficult.
"I can understand Peter's situation. But he did very well for this club and we always supported him when people doubted the decision to bring him to Anfield."
Crouch will team up with Jermain Defoe in a new-look Portsmouth attack next season.
Liverpool are expected to initially receive in the region of 9m for Crouch, who joined the club from Southampton in July 2005 but only started nine Premier League games last term.
Benitez initially said he would consider offers for Crouch in the region of 15m but has been forced to scale back his demands for a player with only a year left on his current contract.
Crouch has scored 40 goals in 135 appearances for Liverpool but has struggled to hold down a regular first-team place in recent times.
He was relegated behind Torres, who scored 33 goals for the Reds after signing from Atletico Madrid last summer.
However, he was a popular figure with Liverpool fans and still managed to net 11 goals as he was mainly used as a substitute by Benitez.
Crouch started his career as a trainee at Tottenham before moves to QPR, Portsmouth, Aston Villa, Norwich - where he had a spell on loan - Southampton and Liverpool.

Peter Crouch has completed his move to Portsmouth from Liverpool in a deal that could be worth up to £11m.
The 27-year-old returns to Pompey six years after leaving and will work with boss Harry Redknapp for the third time in his career.
Crouch said: "It's fantastic to be back. I believe Harry gets the best out of me and think the best years of my career can be here."
The England striker has signed a four-year contract at Fratton Park.
Crouch added: "This club is going places and they can match my ambitions.
"The chance of regular first team football was part of the appeal. I know I'll have to work hard to prove myself in training, but I believe my best years are in front of me.
"I had a fantastic three years at Liverpool and I would not change it for the world. I am privileged to have played for such a top club.
"Towards the end I did not get as many games as I would have liked but I will only take good memories away.
"In no way am I stepping down, I feel I am joining a club that is going places with a new stadium, a new training ground and some very good players."
Redknapp added: "Bringing a player like Peter here shows how far we have come and how far we can go. I'm delighted he's back.
"I never expected to see him back here. He went off to Liverpool and did a fantastic job in my opinion and I'm looking forward to seeing him and Jermain Defoe up front - a big one and a little one - and we've got other good forwards here."
The forward was also praised for his contribution to the Merseyside club by Reds manager Rafael Benitez.
"He is a good professional and we would have wanted him to stay," he said.
"We offered him a new contract but sometimes you have to understand the player. He wanted to play a lot more."
The Spaniard added: "With Fernando Torres now first choice, playing more was always going to be difficult.

Crouch has been unhappy with the lack of a permanent boss at Pompey
England striker Peter Crouch is locked in transfer talks with Sunderland after they agreed a 12m deal with Portsmouth, BBC Sport understands.
The 28-year-old is also a target for Fulham boss Roy Hodgson as he prepares to rake in 5m from the sale of Bobby Zamora to Hull City.
Fulham boss Hodgson may hold the trump card with Crouch reportedly keen to move to London.
Bruce said: "He is a player I have admired for a very long time."
The Black Cats' boss refused to be drawn further on the deal, saying: "We hope we can try to put something together because he would be the type of player of course that would signal our intention of the way we want to take the football club forward."
Asked directly if a fee had been agreed, Bruce said: "I don't understand that just yet, but I have just come off the training ground.
"I haven't been told anything to the contrary. I will be getting back to work in the next couple of hours and we'll see. I know discussions at high levels were going on late last night, so we'll see and I'll be able to tell you more in the next 24 hours."
Portsmouth executive chairman Peter Storrie was unhappy with Crouch's recent criticism of the club having not yet appointed a permanent manager to take over from Paul Hart.
Storrie insisted that was not possible while a proposed takeover by United Arab Emirates businessman Sulaiman Al Fahim was still under discussion.
Al Fahim has now completed the process of due diligence and is now trying to agree a figure with Pompey owner Sacha Gaydamak.
Crouch is also a reported target of Roy Hodgson's Fulham
Sunderland have dropped their interest in Portsmouth's Peter Crouch.
The Black Cats had agreed a 12m fee with Pompey, plus personal terms with the 27-year-old England striker.
However, the offer was withdrawn after Crouch indicated that he would prefer to remain in the south of England rather than move to the north east.
"Naturally this is hugely disappointing for us as Peter was one of our primary targets," Sunderland manager Steve Bruce told his club website.
"I know he was impressed with the set-up here when he came for talks but it's simply a matter of geographical location and that's not something we can affect.
"What's pleasing, however, is that it shows the intent of the club going forward that we are trying to bring players in of his calibre and we will continue to pursue other targets."
Bruce has already signed striker Frazier Campbell from Manchester United this summer for a fee of 3.5m and has also brought in Paraguay defender Paulo da Silva.
The former Wigan boss, backed by millionaire owner Ellis Short, has funds available to further strengthen his squad and revealed there could be plenty more arrivals at the Stadium of Light before the start of the new season.
"We have a number of irons in the fire," added Bruce.
"We'll be looking to make several additions to our squad in the coming weeks."
Fulham were also reportedly interested in signing Crouch after they agreed to sell striker Bobby Zamora to Hull City for 5m.
Crouch will again pair up with Jermain Defoe at Tottenham
Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp says they are close to a deal for Portsmouth and England striker Peter Crouch.
Pompey boss Paul Hart said a fee has been agreed with Spurs, but Redknapp feels there is still work to be done before he lands the 28-year-old.
"They want to sell him, it's common knowledge they need to sell him," said Redknapp after Tottenham's 2-0 Wembley Cup defeat to Celtic.
"I don't think they're crazy demands - it's a fair deal, his wages are fine."
Tottenham, where Crouch started his career, will be the third club at which the striker has played under Redknapp, after spells with the 62-year-old at Southampton and Portsmouth in the past.
He will also link up with his former Portsmouth strike partner Jermain Defoe.
Redknapp added: "He's different. He holds the ball up. Celtic held the ball up well but we don't do that well enough.
"He gives you an option and he's played for me a few times before. He's always done a job and he's great on set-plays at both ends.
"(Spurs chairman) Daniel (Levy) is talking to (Pompey chief executive) Peter Storrie and the pair are very good negotiators.
"Portsmouth have a price they want but myself and Daniel have spoken and we have a price we think is fair. Hopefully a compromise will happen and we'll get something done."
Crouch is expected to sign a five-year deal with Spurs early next week after a reported £10m deal was agreed on Saturday.
He could even travel with the club to Beijing, where Redknapp's men will compete in the Asia Cup alongside West Ham, Hull and Beijing Guoan.
"Given the severe financial restraints in place here we had no choice but to accept an offer from Spurs," Hart told the Sunday Mirror.
"Obviously, I'm disappointed to see Peter leave. (But) I think people need to realise that Pompey have been punching way above their weight and could no longer sustain the level of spending that has gone on here over the past three years.
"And even though a new owner is poised to come in, our dealings in the market will be modest in comparison to the past."
The deal for Crouch, whose basic weekly wage is reported to be significantly higher than those of Tottenham's current top earners, comes despite hints from Redknapp last week that it would be too expensive.
He said at the time: "I just feel that for that type of money it is an awful lot of money. It is an expensive deal because there is no return on it.
"I don't know whether it is possible for us to do that type of deal. It is an expensive deal. The whole package looks expensive."
However, Portsmouth reportedly agreed to drop their £12m asking price in order to do the deal after Crouch made it clear he wanted to return to Tottenham.
His arrival could hasten the departure of Darren Bent, with Sunderland reportedly keen to sign the 25-year-old.
"Darren is looking to go but it's up to people to make the offer that we want," said Redknapp after Bent missed three good goalscoring opportunities against Celtic.
"Nobody misses chances deliberately. He tucked some great chances away in pre-season and he will always score goals. He's a good player but I just want some balance and Crouchy would give us something different."
Leeds youngster Fabian Delph is another player Redknapp is interested in.
"He's a terrific young player but there will be a few clubs in for him," Redknapp added.
Crouch was Portsmouth's top scorer with 16 goals last season
Tottenham have agreed a deal with Portsmouth to sign striker Peter Crouch for an undisclosed fee.
The 28-year-old England international has agreed personal terms and passed a medical at White Hart Lane.
A statement on the Portsmouth website has indicated that Crouch's sale was dictated by financial issues affecting the south coast side.
Crouch, who opted against joining Sunderland, returns to the club where he began his career as a trainee.
The fee for Crouch is believed to be in the region of 10m and the contract reported to be for five years and worth 70,000 a week.
Crouch scored 16 goals in all competitions for Portsmouth last season and, in a club statement, Pompey acknowledged the need to cash in on their star striker.
"His sale was necessitated by the club's commitment to repay scheduled debts while we are in a transitional period of completing the takeover," said a spokesman on the club's website.
Pompey announced on 21 July they have agreed in principle to a takeover by United Arab Emirates tycoon Sulaiman Al Fahim, after the 32-year-old passed the Premier League's fit and proper person test.
The statement also says that the club will now look to "add fresh faces to the first-team squad as soon as possible."
BBC Sport understands that Crouch's arrival is likely to clear the way for the departure from Spurs of striker Darren Bent, who was scheduled to join the rest of the squad on the plane for their pre-season tour to China but was a late withdrawal from the trip.
Bent has been a target of Sunderland, where Crouch rejected a 12m move last week after indicating a desire to remain in the south of England.
Tottenham will be the third club at which Crouch has played under manager Harry Redknapp, after spells with the 62-year-old at Southampton and Portsmouth in the past.
He will also link up with his former Pompey strike partner Jermain Defoe.
Crouch originally left Spurs in July 2000 to join Queens Park Rangers before moving to Portsmouth for his first spell at Fratton Park in 2001.
He has subsequently played for Aston Villa, Norwich (on loan), Southampton and Liverpool before re-joining Portsmouth in July 2008.
The 6ft 7in striker has played 34 times for
Peter Crouch says he had no hesitation in making a dream return to Spurs this week.
It's something of a homecoming for the England international striker following his move to the The Lane from Portsmouth this week.
Having come through our ranks as a youngster, the 28-year-old admits coming back to N17 was not a difficult decision to make.
"I'm really pleased. I had a couple of options but when Spurs came in I just felt that it's a massive club and it will be like coming home," said Peter.
"The football club speaks for itself. Since Harry Redknapp came in he's certainly got the club moving forward towards where it should be.
"When a club like Spurs comes in for you, it's very hard to turn them down. Spurs was always going to be my number one choice and I'm pleased it's all come off."
Peter feels he has come a long way as a player since he was last at the Club, during a career that has spanned five other clubs, as well as 34 England caps.
As he explains: "I was only a young kid when I was here before and a long way from the player I am now.
"I think Ledley is the only player still here from when I was here before. I'm looking forward to seeing him again because I've always kept in touch with him all those years.
"I remember watching the likes of Ginola, Anderton, Sheringham and Ferdinand every week on the terraces with Ledley and it's great to finally be getting the chance to play for this Club.
"Now I bring with me the experience of having played in the Champions League and at a World Cup for England.
"From my point of view, it's not just about coming back, it's about joining a massive football club which has no limit to where it can go."
Peter's move to north London will also provide a reunion with Harry Redknapp, who he worked under during a successful campaign at Southampton, as well as for the early part of last season at Portsmouth.
"The manager has got a lot of faith in me and believes in my ability to be a top player," said Peter. "He always tells me that and, whenever I play for him, he seems to get the best out of me.
"That's proved to be the case at both Portsmouth and Southampton, where I got goals and played well."
And having put pen to paper on a five-year contract with the Club, Peter now has clear ambitions for what he believes is a bright future ahead.
"My goal now is to push on, win things and get us into Europe - hopefully being a part of taking Spurs to where they should be.
"If I can be a part of that and score goals, I'm sure I can also cement my place in the England World Cup squad for next summer.
"However, there is competition for places with some fantastic strikers at the club, and that's going to be healthy for the team. I'm under no illusions - I will have to fight for my place here.
"But playing with the fantastic squad of players we have here every week will only help me, and I think these five years can be the best of my career."
BBC Sport understands Manchester City's Craig Bellamy is top of their list but speculation about Peter Crouch's future at Spurs is wide of the mark.
"We're not anywhere near signing anybody yet but we've got a few irons in the fire," said Redknapp.
"Crouch is going nowhere, though. He is definitely staying."
Redknapp's ready to offload Peter Crouch as Nice striker Loic Remy issues come and get me plea to Spurs
By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER
Last updated at 12:19 AM on 9th August 2010
Harry Redknapp is considering allowing striker Peter Crouch to rejoin Liverpool so he can free up a move for Nice forward Loic Remy.
Tottenham boss Redknapp is open to offers for his England striker and that has alerted Liverpool.
A potential stalling point is Spurs wanting at least 12million for the 29-year-old, who scored 13 goals for the club last season.
Remy is keen to move to White Hart Lane instead of Stoke or West Ham but is desperate for Nice to drop his 13m price tag.
The 23-year-old said: ‘A move to Spurs would be interesting. Stoke is not the move that I want. Nice are in real need of money and adapt the price to help sell me.’
Spurs offered Crouch to West Ham as part of Parker deal
Published 22:45 11/08/10 By Alan Nixon
Tottenham are looking to offload striker Peter Crouch - and it has now emerged that the England hit man was offered to West Ham as part of a proposed swap deal for Scott Parker.
Liverpool and Everton are also interested in Crouch but only if the value is right. Both Roy Hodgson and David Moyes admire the front-runner but the fee would have to be realistic because his wages are so high.
Stoke have broken their transfer record to sign striker Peter Crouch from Tottenham Hotspur for 12m.
Crouch, 30, agreed a four-year deal to complete a busy day for the Potters, who also signed Wilson Palacios from Spurs and Birmingham's Cameron Jerome.
Stoke have paid an initial 10m, but the fee could rise to 12m dependent on the fulfilment of various clauses.
"These fantastic deals are a statement of this football club's intent," said City's chief executive Tony Scholes.
"The club has made incredible strides forward over the past five years and to attract players of this calibre shows our ambitions as we look to continue that progress this season and beyond that."
Manager Tony Pulis added: "There has been a real buzz of excitement around the city about where this club is going since we reached the FA Cup final and then started our Europa League adventure.
"These signings certainly add to that great sense of anticipation.
"Peter has an excellent goalscoring record at the highest level. His goals-per-games ratio for England is remarkable and he scored seven goals in 10 Champions League games for Tottenham last season, which gives you an idea of his pedigree."
