15:20 講演‘‘Useful or Useless Relics? Today’ s Strange Monarchies’’ ベネディクト・アンダーソン(コーネル大学名誉教授:Aaron L. Binenkorb Professor of International Studies, Emeritus, Cornell University)
One hundred years ago, in 1906, monarchies were the normal states, and republics were a minority confined overwhelmingly to the New World. Today, only about 15% of the members of the UN are headed by monarchs. In 1906, almost all the big powers, with the exception of the US and France, were imperial monarchies ruling over vast empires. Today, only Japan and the UK try to insist on their big power status, and their empires are largely gone. The rest are medium-sized, small and even microscopic. Still, why have they survived at all in the age of nationalism, so-called democratization, and now globalization? I will try to tackle this question historically and comparatively.
