Dear all,

I would like to hear from people already did the test;
any tip to get a good score.
I've never tried the test and I only had
English class for 6 months in the high school in Brazil.
My English is from the practice day by day working with
foreigners and also from the movies and TV shows...

My vocabulary is poor comparing with people who has
English class in the school; however I'm a very quick
learner as my 1st language is Portuguese.

I have given myself 3 weeks to prepare to the exam
and I want to get at least 800 points in my score.

Any recommendation for a book is also welcome ;-)

Thanks in advance

Helena

The first thing you should do is to know what TOEIC is like. Please find a book with CD, with which you can simulate both the listening and reading sections, just the same way as the exam itself. (There are many books of the kind. Choose any that you feel comfortable with.)
Be sure to time them all, so you will see where you are.

Then concentrate on the points (grammer, idiom, etc) you need to beef up.

Reading your English and your background, I believe you have a very good chance to clear 800 mark, by just knowing what to do for the exam.

Good luck, and any question is welcome at any time.
I think you just need to practice few books for reading section especially focusing on grammar and vocabulary because the listening section will be much easier for you comparing to reading section.

In my opinion, people who listen English in their life can get high score in the Listening section usually. So just buy a book for TOEIC to practice the reading section.

I recommend you to take a mock test by yourself just a week before the real TOEIC, then you can be familiar with the speed and system of the TOEIC test and can find your blind spots. It will be great help for you. Good luck!
Thanks for the comments.

Globe san, I have searched on the web:
"TOEIC: Official Test-Preparation Guide" by Bo Arbogast.
I hope it's a good one. At least the customer's reviews are quite good.

かんsan: Thanks for the tip. I have tried the test examples last night and it's pretty much demanding in small details... not that easy as I thought...

トトsann: Is there any tip for the mock tests? I would like to do any that can give me a score at the end.

アヤsan: you're right. I made all the listening questions on yahoo, but the grammar ...

While I wait for the TOEIC book I'm practicing studying Advanced Grammar in Use by Martin Hewings (Cambridge Univ. Press).
Good. I think it suits you.

Please start with running through the two sets of "model test."
(You can do them again just before the actual TOEIC exam, so you can measure your progress.)

Things well started are half done.
Cheers!
Hi, Helena.

I think you maybe got all the tips from kind mixi friends, however, I just wanted to add two more things.

First, I strongly recomend to read news papers everyday.
You just skim through at least 5 pages, and if you ever find interesting articles, and that's the time you use your dictionary to look up unfamilier vocabularies.
As you read through till you have test, you can build power vocabularies automatically.

Second, you must be very good at hearing by dealing with foreigners around you, but conversation and news type listening is kind of different.
So I suggest you to either listen to CNN everyday or to buy a CD which is formed just like short news reports on the news.
You listen to it as many times as you can and repeat them at loud.

It worked for me really good.
With your current level of English, I think you can
reach score as high as 900 or more!

I wish you a good try. Luck happens on someone who tried very hard^^!
Thanks all for the positive support ^-^

Globe san: Thanks! I've searched a free-toeic test simulation site in English... let me try this week :-)

トト san: Thanks for the tips. However as my Japanese is not perfect I think the books are a bit difficult... I will try the English one if I find any of your recommendation in the library, I will do a review with them.

kimizo san: You're right! Listening to CNN is very different... it's very difficult sometimes, depending on the accent of the reporter... I receive Time magazine every week which I used to mark the words I don't understand... sometimes all the page is red underlined... 900 is impossible (><)

I will study hard !!!

How many hours people usually study every day to get a score like 800?? (Taking my level as a base?)
kaorin san

Thanks for your comments. I have ordered exactly the same book you recommended. I will get it with other books next week. By now I'm trying the mock tests...

Regards

Helena
