The mission is simple: To celebrate the sport of surfing while raising awareness about the current state of our beaches and oceans. ? June 21, the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, will be a day for people to get in the water, check out a new surf spot, organize a beach clean-up at their local break, or just simply paddle out and celebrate what it means to be a surfer. ? First and foremost, surfers will be encouraged to go surfing and enjoy the world’s precious natural oceanic resources. Next, surfers will be encouraged to organize a beach clean-up with their friends, or to attend one of the cleanups listed on http://www.Surfingthemag.com, or in the pages of Surfing Magazine. With Surfing Magazine’s help, water quality tests will be done at select beaches, and year after year, we will compare the test results. ? Surfing is a communal pastime that harnesses one of the world’s most vital renewable resources. There has been a recent popularity boom surrounding the sport and surf culture, and it’s now estimated there are over 2.5 million active surfers in the United States alone. One can only assume the number of enthusiasts surpasses this greatly. ? International Surfing Day, the sport’s first “holiday,” will serve to unify the tribe and educate the curious masses. It will enable people to have fun, while serving to let the rest of the world know surfers are serious about their sport and playground. ? Scheduled Surfrider Beach Cleanup Zones
