I have two Finnish dictionaries. But many Finnish languages ae not on them and It's really confused me a lot! I know it's often with Finnish lamguage. If you know brilliant dictionary to study Finnish, please let me know!
I don't have any idea if they're any good in studying Finnish, but at least for Finns studying English, I think the best ones are the big dictionaries by WSOY... maybe they're good the other way around, too, but someone else could probably answer that better.
They are quite big, and not exactly cheap (around 80 euros each in Finland), and I've no idea if they're available anywhere else...
But like with any Finnish dictionaries, all entries are in basic form only, and I doubt that they would have a very extensive slang and casual language vocabulary.

今持っている辞書は10年ほど前に買った
The Standard Finnish Dictionary/Cassel
(フィンランド語-英語、英語-フィンランド語)
と最近買った
『フィン・日小事典』
です。どっちも何となく中途半端・・・。
先に文法の構造を覚えたほうが良いかもと思ってます。

I'm sorry I can't understand Finnish yet!
I have interest in your comment's picture of the dictionaly! I have a plan to go to TOKYO in november. I'm going to lookig for the dictionaly!
It is really interesting to me that what kind of dictionalies and texts Japanese people use to study Finnish and what kind of dictionaries and texts use Finnish people to study Japanese!
Sory for my poor English!
フィンランド語またはフィンランド人の方が日本語をどんな辞書やテキストで勉強してるか調べて見ると面白いかも!
In our school we use a book series called "Japanese for busy people" (the pics, there's third book too, but in our school we only use the two first ones, I have "kana" version of the latter, no romaji that is). It's in english though so it's not too good for other way around. I don't think there's any books in finnish related to studying japanese, if dictionaries aren't counted in (like the one mentioned earlier). My sister uses Oxford Japanese-English dictionary, it's quite thick and has lots of words, I use computer dictionary called KanjiBrowze, too bad both are in english.
Oh.. sorry for double posting, but forgot to mention. The book series we use is more focused in formal Japanese and business related stuff so it isn't the best pick for the people wanting to learn "normal" japanese I guess, but I'm no expert yet.. x)
Finnish people learn Japanese in English? It's really interesting to me! It's really difficult to find text books or books to learning langages that suitale for you! I also have interestes in "normal Japanese"! I learnt English with British magazine "kerrang!". I want to learn normal English when I read the interviews in the magazine. Because there were many 4 leter words and printed "****". There are many text books to learn foreign languages, but I cannot have the interest in them!
Yeah, it's really hard to find any good material for Japanese studying in Finnish. Though it helps quite some because on 3rd grade at grade school you can pick one of about 3-5 languages you want to study as your "A"-language. English, Swedish, German, French and sometimes Russian too. You study this A language for about 13 years till the end of high school.
In junior high you can pick one extra language at 8th grade (more choices, depending on school like Latin, Spanish, Italian, etc. I guess Japanese might be possible too, but only in few places in Finland) and you have to pick swedish at 7th grade and study it till end of high school since it's our second mother tongue.
It helped me to study english when I played english games (adventure mainly) when I was kid, I've also had many foreign penpals I've had to talk english with. I guess only way to learn is to start with easy words and then gradually expand your vocabulary. Helps a lot if there's some person to correct the mistakes.
I got two dictionaries. Bigger one is "Suomi- Japani Sanakirja"by Hisashi hatano. This dictionary has many words and a table of conjugations from "Suomen kielen perussankirija". This dictionary is really usefull! And small one is by Jussila Yoshinobu Honda. This dictionay is very simple and includes some words for Helsink's daily conversation.I think these dictionaries good for beginners!
I'm going to become accustomed to Finnish! But I can find words that I want to know more than before! I REALLY appreciate everyone (PUPUさん、vlmiさん、マイヤさん、Bayliさん)who gave me excellent advices!
Kiitän sinua sydämestäni!!! :)
