I don't know why, but when I read Murakami's books I always get hungry. He has such a simple way of expressing most of the dishes, but it still seems to always make me want to eat them. My favourite is when Midori cooks the main character a bunch of food for dinner, in Norwegian Wood. But even rereading Kafka on the Shore Murakami describes young Kafka cooking eggs and bacon in a frying pan in a way that makes me hungry. I also like when the character in The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle is cooking spaghetti, and drinking Cutty Sark on the rocks.
Do you agree with this? What description of food made you the hungriest?
Sandwiches!! in Hard-boiled Wonderland/End of the World
. I wanna eat the sandwiches which were made by the plump girl. I'm also interested in the dishes that the hero of a novel cooked for a librarian at his room as a token of gratitude for delivering books.
Do you know 'Murakami Recipe'?
I'm pretty sure you will like the book.
Chao!
Akasaka: Hmmm... I can't remember that part, but it's been a while since I read "Hard-boiled Wonderland..." and I really want to read it again as well. I think I read that book in less than one day, so it explains why it's hard for me to remember every part, even though I remember most. I know what you mean, for some reason, every time Murakami talks about making sandwiches I feel like eating on... even though the explanations are so simple. Even drinking milk! I want to drink some too.
Aichan: Thanks for the comment. I didn't know Murakami intended his audience to get hungry, but he does a very good job of making us hungry, doesn't he. THat means he is very successful.
hi.nice to meet you.
I like his books very much.I have been reading them before I go to sleep on the bed everynight,I can not sleep without it now.
my fav foods is J's french fries with beer in『HEAR THE WIND SING』It makes me very hungry always.
I love drinking thats why..(chuckle)
thanks☆
みィ: I agree. I just finished "Hear the Wind Sing" last week and I became quite hungry when he talked about eating French fries and drinking beer at a simple pub. Made me want to go find a foreign pub and order some fries.
みィ&リック:I agree too! When I read "Hear the Wind Sing" for the first time, I was able to imagine clearly some fries and beer, and I would like to have in a pub. But, many cases of his works, I think I want to cook anything rather than to eat. For exmaple, in dance dance dance, "i" have the guy( I have forgotten his name, he is tactor, maybe.) cook something and he eats and drinks with the guy. Later, I tried to cook, but, in the midnight, I couldn't buy materials.
I'm glad you all like the topic! It's fun to talk about food, and Murakami does it so well. I have always wanted to talk about the fact that he makes me so hungry, and I'm glad you all do too. It makes me want to write stories about food too.
