Many ASD students have a difficulty with crafting projects, such as cutting a paper with a straight line, folding a paper, and measuring and creating a box, etc.
Haipa-kun came to my office and almost cried because he was having a difficulty with the Comping Technique class, and he was failing the class. The Comping Technique class requires a lot of cutting, folding, and measuring skills. Due to his disability, Haipa-kun has a weakness in hand coordination skill. He has been spending a lot of time doing his projects and trying to make them right but has not much improved. Haipa-kun usually does not give up easily, but his face told me he did not know what to do. I asked him to show how he was doing his projects. Haipa-kun brought some of his projects that he has worked before. Hmmm. Yes. His projects showed me that they were unfortunately not passing grades. For example, some of the projects that required his folding skills were not folded straight. One of paper bags that Haipa-kun made was not symmetrical because the measurements were not accurate.
We discussed about how Haipa-kun could improve his hand coordination skills. One of the ideas was to use Origami paper. In order to make crafts from Origami paper, it requires to use a lot of hand coordination skills and fold a paper straight. Due to the color paper with one side is white, it's easy to see the off center. Haipa-kun was so motivated and challenged the origami paper to improve his crafting skills. At first, Haipa-kun was frustrated because he was having difficulties with folding the paper straight. However, due to the color paper, he could easily see his mistakes and re-do it. Haipa-kun brought origami papers home and continued practicing his crafting skills. Then later, Haipa-kun brought his another crafting project that he worked on that received a passing grade. "Yeah! I did it." Haipa-kun was smiling and happy about what he received.
After all, with all his effort, Haipa-kun passed his class. Although Haipa-kun improved his crafting skills, he realized that he would need to continue practicing his crafting skills in order for him to get a job. However, Haipa-kun also understood that he has a weakness in crafting skill and hopes to find a job that does not much focus on using his crafting skills for a majority of his time. Although the semester was over, Haipa-kun continued practicing his crafting skills using Origami paper.
