QUESTION: I want to read you a quote that you gave during the original theatrical release of El Topo. You said, "If you're great, El Topo is a great film. If you're limited, El Topo is limited." Do you still agree with this assessment?

ALEJANDRO JODOROWSKY: I still think the same thing, because I do not make a film to direct the
emotions of the audience, like Alfred Hitchcock, for example, who calculated exactly when you needed to feel fear or suspense. I make pictures with different levels of interpretation. An idiot will see idiocy (laughs), while a sensitive person will see beauty. Some people may find it funny, while others may feel that it's a tragedy.
