依頼のメール:------------------ Acquiring a picture from the 2006 Tokyo Santarchy event for independent Canadian documentary.
Dear cabcab,
My name is Oliver Harding, and I'm contacting you on behalf of Gary Evans and Marc Girard, co-directors of the 52-minute independent Canadian documentary "À la rencontre du Père Noël" (English title: "Men in red suits"), an exploration of the modern day Santa Claus and the men who choose to embody this universal archetype.
We're currently in the final stages of post-production and in the process of selecting the archival video footage and images to include in our final cut. No documentary chronicling contemporary incarnations of Santa Claus would be complete without a brief overview of the rapidly growing international Santarchy movement! We've come across a cornucopia of pictures taken at different Santarchy events over the past decade, and one in particular that, according to my research, would belong to you!
I'm wondering whether you would be so kind to allow us to use it in our film. Given the fact that this is not a big-budget production, but rather a small Canadian independent doc, we don't really have much of a budget to pay you for acquiring the (of course non-exclusive) rights to your pic, but I'm sure we could scrape something together and come to some kind of an agreement! I've pasted a short synopsis as well as basic information about the film below, and please don't hesitate to request more information about the project and/or the filmmakers themselves. Please e-mail me at xxxx@xxxx.xxx so that I may send you the picture in question.
Looking forward to hearing from you cabcab!
Oliver --
-- Synopsis: Every year men put on red suits, stuff pillows under their belts, and transform themselves into the best possible approximation of Santa Claus. Over the past eight years, as Marc Girard played the role in Montréal daycares, he became acutely aware of the power of his character. Santa is a living archetype, a mysterious figure who has evolved throughout time, absorbing multifarious influences. "Men In Red Suits" asks: What does it mean to be a Santa in this day and age?
Original Title: À la rencontre du Père Noël English Title: Men in red suits Running Time: 52 minutes Year Of Production : 2007 Country Of Origin : Canada Category : Documentary
I'm cabcab in Flicker.
I think your project of the movie is interesting.
But I have some questions before I permit to
use my photo in your movie.
Because participants in Santarchy are my friend,
and I don't wish to use my photo for the purpose dishonorable
for them as responsibility which took the photograph.
- What meaning do you want to express on the whole movie?
- What role does the scene using my photo play in the whole movie?
- Which photograph do you want to use definitely?
- Can I check the prototype version of your movie before public presentation?
Especially I want to check the scene using my photo.
- Does you have a plan which your movie performs Internet distribution
using YouTube etc.?

Hi Cabcab,
many thanks for your prompt response. I can really understand where
you're coming from with your query, as I've also seen quite a number
of films in which the filmmakers duped their subjects. I'll try to do
my best at providing you with as much information about the project as
possible.
Gary Evans and Marc Girard, co-directors of the 52-minute independent
Canadian documentary "À la rencontre du Père Noël" (English title:
"Men in red suits"), decided to explore the modern day Santa Claus and
the men who choose to embody this universal archetype with their film
to better understand how the celebration changed meaning after it was
appropriated by corporations and commercial culture (i.e. Coca Cola).
No documentary chronicling contemporary incarnations of Santa Claus
would be complete without a brief overview of the rapidly growing
international Santarchy movement! So basically, a 6-minute section of
the film deals with the international movement of Santarchy, which
aims to reclaim how this Pagan celebration was feted prior to it
becoming a family-friendly, diluted excuse for corporate greed. The
filmmakers traveled to New York City to film their annual Santarchy
event, and interviewed many revelers throughout the day/nightlong
festivities!
** The following narration is heard over the 10 or so Santarchy
pictures that are shown on screen (this is where your image would be
shown, if the filmmakers select it in their final cut and of course if
you grant us permission):
"Santarchy as a movement began in San Francisco in the early 90s, and
is almost surely an offshoot of the merry pranksterism of the 1960's.
Going further back, it has its roots in the outrageous spectacles of
Dadaists, and Surrealists.
As loosely "organized" by the Cacophony Society, the gatherings draw
dozens, hundreds, even thousands, of participants, across the globe."
I've attached to this e-mail the photo I'd like to propose to Marc and
Gary.

It's stunning! Great job capturing that fragment in time!
I've also attached a one-page synopsis of the film to give you a
strong sense of the tone, theme and topics broached.
The one thing I cannot provide you with however is a copy of the final
film before public presentation. You have to understand that I alone
am dealing with about 35 different institutions (such as Coke, the
NFB, Bibliothèque des Archives Nationales du Québec, etc) and people
(about a dozen Santarchy photo owners such as yourself) and that our
tight schedule simply does not allow for us to wait for a final
pending approval from everyone we acquire media from before submitting
our final copy to broadcasters. You can have my word that the
narration I've outlined above is what will be heard over your photo,
should we select it. Nothing I'm writing here is to be taken out of
context, I promise!
If you're still uncertain, please don't hesitate to request more
information about the project and/or the filmmakers
themselves.
Looking forward to hearing from you cab/xxxx!
(And if you do decide to grant us permission to use your image, can
you tell me what name you'd like to be credited as? cabcab? xxxx? This
will also be important for us.)
