Norwegian American rock band formed in New York in the autumn of 1995 the couple Paal Savoy
(a-ha) and Lauren Savoy (vocals, guitar). The third permanent member since the beginning has been the drummer Frode Unneland (Chocolate Overdose and Popium). Savoy has a guitar-based sound, more ramshackle and eksperiementelt than a-ha, yet melodic and catchy. The musical inspirations are taken from both 60 - and 90-century.
Savoy got a solid start with their debut album Mary Is Coming, released in February 1996. The disc was recorded in Oslo, New York and London, and contained "Velvet," which was a big hit. Later, the song is also a hit for a-ha. Savoy consisted at this time of four members - the fourth, Greg Calvert (bass), ended before the work on album number two started. In the meantime, left the Savoy label Warner in favor of a new contract with EMI.
Mary Is Coming sold 50,000, while the sequel Lackluster Me (1997) stopped on 20 000 This was a more varied album, where the guitars were toned down in favor of a more atmospheric sound. In August 1999, it was clear to the Mountains of Time, the album that really solidified Savoy as something more than a hobby band for Paal Savoy. The album sold 60? 000 copies and the group reputation. A limited edition of 5000 contained an extra CD with five cuts, called The Bovarnick Twins.
Two years later came Reasons to Stay Indoors, which was a sales success and the group Grammy Award for the second time. The first edition was issued as a double CD limited edition. For the first time brought the group into a producer, the Swede Michael Ilbert. Perhaps as a result of this album had more complexity in the arrangements and sound. In parallel with these merits participated Paal Savoy in the reunification of the a-ha, while Frode Unneland managed to be a founding Popium.
Early in 2004 gathered Savoy again, now that the quartet Maya Vik (from the band Furia) on bass. The group chose now to focus completely on their own, independent of record companies, and established his own record label, Teen Student Records. Their first album on own label was simple and fine the name of Savoy, and marked a new beginning for the exciting band. Again, it was possible to secure an exclusive treat in the form of an optional CD if you bought the first edition of the album.
