I finish work in Akihabara around 7:40pm so I am planning to run a short one-hour English D&D 3.5 Game on at Yellow Submarine. I could also run a game on Wednesday night if there is demand. I am also planning to run the game on Monday nights on Skype for people who are busy on Thursday or live outside the Kanto Area. Here are the details:
Game: D&D 3.5 World: Custom Language: English Number of players: 2 - 6 Combat: Light Roleplaying: Heavy Level: Beginning (1st) Starting: March 2010 Sessions * Thursday 8pm - 9pm (Yellow Submarine - Akihabara) * Monday 9pm - 11pm (Online)
*** D E T A I L S ***
Story: Your kingdom is in trouble.
The land is under siege from an orc horde that can't be stopped. The prince is dead, the king is weak and the queen could be a traitor. The nobles are squabbling while neighboring kingdoms are planning to invade the border. And heroes like you are all dead.
But not anymore. You've been resurrected by a necromancer, the land's greatest magician. He is training you and building an undead army for you to lead. He claims it is to save the kingdom in it's time of need. But has power corrupted him?
Will you be the champion of good or the unwitting pawn of evil?
Background: This game is based in an “Ennie Award “nominated D20 gameworld. It has never been translated to Japanese. I will be changing some location and character names. After the campaign is complete I will provide each player with information on how get the full world so they can run it themselves if they wish. It is 100% “open game content” and can be modified for use with other d20 supplements.
Plan: I will be running this game for three months (March, April and May of 2010). Each week the players will receive plot points for accomplishing goals. The plot points can be used to gain individual glory and fame (such as start a guild, marry a noble or learn new powers). But the enemies will also be gaining plot points as time passes. If the PCs don't focus on the main storyline the bad guys will win and the kingdom will fall. At the end of May 2010, if the heroes are falling behind, they may have to sacrifice themselves just to hold off the forces of evil. The more heroes there are in the final army, the greater the chance of success.
New players can always join the game. More heroes mean a stronger army to battle the orcs (just like Suikoden). I will add new gaming times as more players arrive. These new groups can add their Plot Points to the army total and help save the kingdom.
System: This is a D&D D20 game, but you do not need a D&D rule book. The game will use a very simplified version of the D&D rules. Most combat will be not be long drawn-out battles, but a system similar to “Skill Challenges” that will resolve battles with a few rolls. This will allow multiple combats in a single hour and still keep the excitement of using dice and magic items.
New players (who join in April or May) will level up quickly and always be able to fully participate in adventures.
If you want to join the game or have questions, post below or contact me directly in Mixi (in English or Japanese).
I am happy to report the online game on Monday went well! The dice roller we are using is not perfect (there is some delay) but I feel it is good enough until I can implement one on the website.
The combat system worked better this time. We were able to handle three battles in two hours of gameplay. Players had a better idea of what their characters are capable of and produced some interesting combat maneuvers (throwing lab equipment, ordering the enemy to surrender, using weapons unconventionally). Still I think there is room for improvement. My goal is 10 - 15 min combats.
I'm concerned about speaking time. Some people got to speak more than others during the game. It is my job to set some ground rules so everyone gets an opportunity to shine. The next game will be more roleplaying oriented. I'll have to plan so everyone gets to interact with NPCs.
Thanks to the players for doing a great job! Please post feedback and suggestions in that thread.
I so enjoyed Monday night's game, and thank you for nice mastering
I'm afraid that I got to speak more... No, not "I'm afraid that". I think that I actually got to speak more than other people. Next time, I'll support other people to speak with NPCs, rather than concentrate on my roleplaying.
By the way, I have already finished play report for these two sessions, but in Japanese. I posted them to my mixi diary. I will translate (or rewrite) them into English and post them to GoogleDocs as soon as possible. Or should I post them immediately in current language anyway?
And...I have to apologize that I can't show up the 4th session that will be held at March 29. This night, I have to be absent because of my business trip
You can post the play report as soon as you want. Since other players have access, they can assist with translation. As for the 29th -> Can you play from the hotel? Hehe.
You do not have to apologize for speaking. You have helped a great deal in the games!
I have posted more on this subject in the game suggestions thread. Please visit that page:
I am getting ready for tonight's game. Unfortunately we didn't get to play last time because we spent the whole time trying to get the software working. I have some news:
1) I will not use the character screens until the end of the game. This way, we can be assured we will play.
2) I have set up the video in a new way so there will be no advertising on it. It may take us a little while to get that running though.
3) I have set up a second computer that can be screencast. This is good because it will allow me to show the players what I am doing when we need to install new software.
I want to thank the players of last night's game. The game started out slow because I was struggling with some technical issues, but ended with a very memorable scene! The dice rolls created a situation I could not have predicted. This is why I love TRPGs!
I'll be working this week on improving the video streaming. I hope the new system will have less of a delay (Sometime the video was delayed up 20 seconds!) and will be ready at the game start. I also need to do a better job of preparation with dialogue and descriptions written ahead of time.
I'm looking forward to next week's game, which will start at 9:30pm.
This is a one of today's gameplayers, D.Kurahara, feeling thankfulness to your game mastering.
Owing to your effort, I fully enjoyed today session.
I am looking forward to re-joining next opportunity of D&D adventure managed by a mysterious wizard. But I beg you of reminding of magical item as the reward!
T_N-san> I'm sorry you couldn't make it. I had an important plot hook for your character. But they are still on the adventure so you won't miss it if you attend this week.
くらはら-san> Welcome to the group! It was a pleasure meeting you last night. I'm sorry the game was so short. I think I will be able to stay longer next week.
(Don't worry, The Master always rewards success. Just don't fail...)
Wow, great game on Monday! The players came up with some excellent ideas on how to steal the magic sponge. My favorite was their attempt to create a sponge that temporarily created wine. I regret making the Wizard roll to create it. Perhaps I should have let him succeed automatically and given the party the opportunity to role-play that scene out. It would have been very funny.
Still, they managed to defeat the orcs in a drinking game thanks to the stamina of the Gunner and the (Natural 20!) charms of the Archer. Also the Etten was returned back to a pair of Imperial solders who will be able to explain more of the Wizard's and Legionnaire's background.
Great job team! Expect large XP awards.
THURSDAY PLAYERS - Tonight's game is canceled. My corporate class in Akihabara was canceled and I will not be traveling to Tokyo.
Have you ever known of this truly curious site: WWII Research & Preservation Society:( http://www.ww2rps.com/index.htm ). This can be called "professional geek" about live-RPG.
I wrote an article in japanese as below: ( http://mixi.jp/view_diary.pl?id=1474566974&owner_id=2281505 )
I can' participate in tonight's game.
My father got some trouble and come to Tokyo from Shizuoka, my home town.
From this evening to tomorrow, I don't have free time.
I can't sorry for my absence.
If you are a game master seeking convenient images of gold coin as reward for greedy adventurers..., look at this!: "El Dorado is here! : Shanghai Museum" http://mixi.jp/view_album.pl?id=49896071&owner_id=2281505&mode=photo
I poseted a diary for Monday night game members to have a talk about our PC's behaviors and actions (to finish our campaign in three more games). I also plan to post a brief translation of the campaing as comments for this diary, to help our decision.
I want to thank the online players for showing up to Monday's session. The goal of the session was to review that campaign world I have been using, Murchad's Legacy. The game has been posted online as OGL Open Content.
http://murchadslegacy.pbworks.com/
Read as much as you want to learn about this world. I will assume that by next week your characters will have had time to study through Murchad's library.
We will be playing three more games. After that we will start a new game using modern characters. I have not decided what system, but it should be simple to learn.
The software is coming along well. Today I was able to get basic animation working.
On July 5th, we did something different. Instead of running the D&D campaign, Sakaki-san, Mokajima-san and I created gameworlds. Using random tables, we tried to reconcile a eclectic mixture of Setting / Tone / Technology / Opponents, etc. The results will be posted in another thread.
If you missed the class, read the instructions and post your own!
Here is the thread: http://mixi.jp/view_bbs.pl?id=54563484
Hello.
I am sorry for my absence tonight again...!
In these days, as previously scheduled, my job became to busier than the first quarter.
It is a little difficult to join every week until end of August.
p.s. to Nicholas,
Thank you for your response to my mixi message.
I replied for you and apologize for reply you so late…
Tomorrow night will be the final episode of the Monday D&D game. I hope all the players can attend as we discover the fate of the "Agents of the Master".
I'm sorry, I am canceling the Online game on Aug. 16th. I will need to prepare for an important game demonstration on Tuesday. My apologies to the Monday players.
