*Just my views on some issues in Venezuela, not directly related to Chavez... but still I think it's good to have context...*
I don't mean Irak, DPR Congo or even Palestine. I mean Venezuela.
Believe it or not, an estimate of 10.000 people die gruesome and violent deaths every year in this country. And I think it wouldn't be too exaggerated to say that more than 95% of those crimes go unpunished.
The thing is that a large portion of the people who die violent deaths in this country are from the lower side of the social ladder. Poor people. The ones living in the huge slums in Caracas and other major cities. As I see it, it's a mistake to compare poverty here with poverty in sub-saharian Africa, just as an example. I think it's safe to say that almost no one dies from starvation here. A house in a Caracas slum would look like a mansion to a refuggee in a camp in Sudan or Somalia. But that doesn't mean that Venezuela's poor have it easy... Getting sick is almost the same as dying for them, as our public hospitals are in such pathetic state it hurts. Dying isn't the peaceful ending it should be, as they have no means to afford proper rites and burials...
And the worst thing is violence. These people have to put up with gang gun fights day and night...always living in fear of some relative or loved one being the next one on the evening news. It's so common, no one even raises an eyebrow when that kind of news are shown every single night. We are used to hearing about horrifying numbers of dead people every weekend, without even blinking.
For those of us lucky enough to live in somewhat upscale neighbourhoods, behind iron bars adn electrified fences, such events happen less often. We've learned how to handle life in fear, as it were mere natural instinct. We've learned to trust nobody, and to fear people from the less affluent portions of society. Venezuela's divisions are not based in race, but in social class.
But very seldom we see things such as the things we saw this week. Three kids from a wealthy family were kidnaped, tortured and murdered in cold blood. Their bodies were found naked, tossed somewhere in the outskirts of Caracas. A horrible crime indeed, but I wonder if it would have sparked such lively reaction in the media had it been 3 poor kids from a slum... I can't help myself but thinking those 3 kids would have been a mere 3 anonymous numbers hidden on the weeked report "75 people murdered in Caracas this weekend"...
People are angry at the authorities, and they should be!!! There isn't a single judge, police officer or law enforcement agent in this country who isn't a crook. Corrupted, vile maggots, all of them. I say this without a hint of regret or hesitation. The venezuelan system is rotten, and they should all pay for their lack of scruple. But even if people keep protesting, I don't think any real change will come out of it. The authorities will arrest some john doe, blame him, and no one will be able to tell them wrong. Case closed. Long live Venezuelan Justice.
The problem is deeply engrained in Venezuelan society...not only in the authorities. It shows in a society that encourages people to cheat. That rewards people who take advantage of their peers. Where showing respect for others is a sign of weakness.
Law enforcement agents are nasty pieces of shit in this country, I agree. But wailing at them isn't going to solve anything.
My deepest felt condolences to the Faddoul Family. No family, rich or poor, should go through the hell you are going through. May your sons rest in peace.
*The Faddoul Brothers (all younger than 17 y.o.) were kidnapped, tortured and murdered in cold blood last week....that motivated me to write these lines.
