Hi. My name is Tom. I graduated from SFSU in May. Sorry about using English. I am starting to study Nihongo. I am an editor at Alta Books. I am interested in how you choose textbooks and develop lesson plans. I'd also like your advice on where to find the best miso ramen in Tokyo, so I can be prepared for my next trip. Thanks for your help.

Welcome to mixi, Tom. I am glad that you got the position at Alta Books. I am thinking to organize a LLC textbook in 2006, so you can help me as an ESL textbook editor. Pls visit my mixi (バギー)often and contribute your stories. Thank you again and happy new year!!!!!
Hi Tom-san, バギーsan, welcome to the community!
Congraturations to you two for graduating form SFSU
MATESOL in May!
Tom-san, are you working at the BayArea? Working for a
publishing company sounds interesting to me.
Do you develop ESL material? sell them? or
do research...?

I vividly remember one MATESOL graduate saying that she
couldn't go back to teaching after working for a
publishing company, considering the salary$$$...!!

Anyhow, choosing a textbook is a tricky work...because
many factors involve in it... from Ss' level to budget.
For me, the most important things were, probably,
chatchy illustration and amount of listening activity.

Are you a fan of miso ramen? Unfortunately I don't know
much about it... I would like to know, too.
Hi, Tom,
I am a graduate in Spring 2001. I recently got a job at an ESL program in the Bay Are and have to create the
entire course from scratch.

An a non-native teacher myself, I'm looking for a
textbook with an audio CD to listen to native
pronounciation, a variety of acitivies so that I can
pick and choose depending on Ss' level or time
constraint and topics that encourage international
students to reflect their own culrue or experience
(I think this will be the theme of my course...).

If you know any textbook like this, please let me know.
I will be needing one soon.

p.s. I visited Alta Books a few days ago;)
Nice to meet you Sotanga san. My name is Yasue. Wow! The Mixi community works!!!

I thought Tom killed this community since nobody wrote comments after his. I am currently teach Japanese but my goal is always teaching ESL. Could you tell me how to effectively search for a teaching position (English or Japanses)?

Good luck on your new job!
Hello,

Thanks for the input; it's nice to hear from teachers about what they want. If I can think of suggestions, I'll write you or post them here. TESOL is coming up, so work has been a bit hectic, but I'll try to think of some titles you might find useful.
Hi, again everyone.

I always liked to use LLC techniques which were developed by Dr. Weinstein when I worked in a high school ESL. I used her textbook, Stories to Tell Our Children. It has other ESL students' short stories/topics, and they were always an icebreaker in a multicultural classroom.
Hi,Tom-san,
Thanks again for helping me choose a textbook. I will use that book as a resource for this coming quarter, and if it works well I will order more for my students:)
