Bringing learner-centered practice to Global English Contexts What is the potential for learner-centered practice in global English contexts? In this interactive lecture, Dr. Weinstein will explore principles of learner-centered teaching with a focus on the Japanese context. She will address the learner-centered practices that are used effectively in Japan, as well as providing a framework for expanding and deepening these practices. Specifically, Weinstein will present Learners’ Lives as Curriculum (LLC), a model for teaching, teacher training and curriculum development which uses language- learner and native-speaker narratives to promote active participation, language and academic skill development, information literacy, content learning and community-building. Participating teachers will be provided techniques for developing materials that are highly motivating to English language learners while meeting curriular goals for secondary and university level English. The presentation will also explore the connections between professional development for English teachers with the development of a highly engaging curriculum for English learners. Tentative plan: 1.
