Special Meeting Over, What Next?
Rangzen, Tibetan's birth right
Role of Tibetan Youth in the Freedom Movement

These topics kicked off the 3rd Tibet Symposium in New York organized by the Regional Tibetan Youth Congress of NY & NJ. The main aim of this Tibet Symposium is to educate, inform and engage the local Tibetans by inviting scholars, leaders and activits. The previous 2 Symposiums have been a great success, so too was this one. The conference hall was packed with more than 300 local New York Tibetans. The panelists included Trisur Tenzin Namgyal Tethong, Chedue Tseten Norbu and TYC Vice-President Dhondup Dorjee. The symposium was moderated by Zurkhang Karma Gyatso.

Trisur Tenzin Namgyal Tethong spoke about the "Special Meeting" held in Dharamsala last year in November. The main purpose of the meeting was to engage all the Tibetans in discussing about what to do following the brutal crackdown of Tibetans by the Chinese Communist regime. Many Tibetans from around the World attended the meeting including several young Tibetans. However majority of the attendees spoke of their undying support for His Holiness the Dalai Lama and concluded in following the Middle Way policy. It was important that the Tibetans take reponsibility on their shoulders and discuss about the dire situation following the brutal crackdown on peaceful demonstration in Tibet. Trisur mentioned that the interests and desires of the 6 million Tibetans is the most important thing to consider. Trisur stressed on the importance of educating yourself thoroughly so that you are in a position to explain to anyone about the Tibetan situation and the illegal occupation of Tibet through international law.

Chedu Tseten Norbu spoke about "Rangzen, Tibetan's birth right". Taking interest in politics was important. The situation in Tibet is grim and tense. He gave a few instances of the torture and killings in Tibet, such as a kid beaten in Drepung to the extend of leading to a rotten leg as a result of denial to a medical treatment, prisoners held in Samye in extremely poor conditions, a Tibetan student beaten and killed by Chinese students in Chengdu. He said that Rangzen is "shitsa" - base of our struggle. He heavily stressed on the importance of taking responsibility on our shoulder. Tibetans always rely on His Holiness the Dalai Lama instead of taking responsibility. We have to look for opportunities with an understanding of global events and issues. Taking reponsibilities whether as an individual or in the government was extremely important. China has been attacking the Dalai Lama hoping that his standing in the Tibetan community and the world will go down. Active debate and dicussions was important before the Election of Kalon Tripa (Prime Minister).

Dhondup Dorjee, himself a very young Tibetan and holding the Vice President post in Tibetan Youth congress had the perfect topic - Role of Tibetan youth in the Freedom movement. He started his speech with an important point - leadership crisis in the Tibetan community, the election of Kalon Tripa being round the corner. He gave a brief rundown of the period of Tibetan Youth Congress activities since its birth. The first decade from 70s to 80s was mostly social work. The next decade was involved in International meetings followed by more involvement in politics. The importance and influence of TYC is evident from the various Chinese allegations and claims that TYC is a terrorist organization. Tibetan Youth should take more responsibility in politics, studying hard was a very important requirement. We have to look for opportunities and be prepared. His Holiness has recently invited Tibetan youth from the West to come and spend time within the Tibetan community in India to get experience and take responsibilities.

A lively Q&A followed a brief lunch. The audience actively participated in asking questions. Many questions were asked such as - Should TYC be a political organization?, the situation of Tibet after 10 or 15 years, and about the Special Meeting. The panelists agreed that political organization is important for democracy. The Symposium ended with a fair understanding that taking responsibility was important.
