ご存知カーペンターズの初期の大ヒット曲。
作者は、やはり彼らの大ヒット曲「We've Only Just Bugun 愛のプレリュード」と同じく、Paul Williams & Roger Nicholsの名コンビ。二人から送られたデモ・テープをRichard Carpenterが気に入って、彼らのレパートリーとなったようです。
Karen Carpenterのブルーな歌声が最高に決まっていた曲で、まだ二十歳そこそこだったのに、これだけの表現力のあったこの人は、やはり素晴らしい才能の持ち主だったと言わざるを得ません。
歌の内容も、いきなり「ひとりごとを言って、老けたなって感じる....」といったような出だしで、当時の同世代の日本のアイドル歌謡とは全く違う世界。
以下、韻をふみながら展開する歌詞は、延々と憂鬱な気持ちを表現し続け、雨の日と月曜日はいつも私を落ち込ませてしまうと結ぶ。
７０年代終わりには、Boomtown Ratsのヒット曲で「I Don't Like Monday」という歌がありましたが、確かに月曜日は「これからまた辛い１週間が始まるのかぁ」と憂鬱になることが多いものです。
そして、本日東京は久しぶりにまとまった雨の降る日となりましたが、正にこの歌が似合う、うっとおしい一日でした。それで、この曲を思い出し、トピックを作った次第です。
作者のPaul Williams自身の歌や、多くのカヴァーがありますけれど、これはやはりCarpentersを超える録音にはお耳にかかったことがありません。個人的にはAnn Burtonのヴァージョンも好きですが。
