実はこの歌は、私が入っているべつのコミュのネタにするつもりだったのですが、やはり雨の歌である以上、こちらがふさわしいと思い、トピックをたてさせていただきました。
まず町の中での雑踏と会話が聞こえてきて、雨が突然降ってくる。そしてセクシーな女性のモノローグが始まり、やがてゴスペル・タッチの女声コーラスが流麗なストリングスと共に展開されるこの歌、当時中学生だったチュートン少年のハートにズキンときましたねぇ。
私に大人の世界を教えてくれた歌のひとつです。
多分バリー・ホワイトにとっても出世作だったと思われるこの歌。２年後にはインストゥルメンタル「Love's Theme/愛のテーマ」の大ヒットでブレークしますが、やはり原点はここでしょう。電話の相手の男の声は勿論低音の魅力でならしたバリー本人。結局この後リード・ヴォーカルのグローディーン・ジェームスと結婚することになるのですが、このセクシー・ヴォイス同士のふたりの日常会話というのを聞いてみたかったですね。
雨の日に愛する男のことを想うのはいいとしても、何でわざわざ男のところへ電話して、「伝えたいことがあるの」ともったいぶって、「I Love You」と今更のようにささやくのか、中学生のガキだった当時は勿論、今もハッキリ言って判りませんが（笑）、このデジタル時代に思春期を迎えていたならば、「I Love You」の部分を何度もヘッドフォンをかけてプレイバックしてしまったことでしょう。
