I heard that Japanese language was the most difficult one to learn when i was a boy and I believed it, because I was too little to judge if it was true or not.
Difficulties of leaning a language is really depending on his/her background, especially on their mother tongue. For Koreans, leaning Japanese must be very easy, because our languages came from the same origin, and the grammars are basically the same.
Then why do they say or believe Japanese is the difficult language ? I think it's easy to answer. That's because they are speaking this language !!! People would like to proud of themselves by believing their mother tongue is difficult and complicated so that other can not easily master.
When I was in the US I met many from different countries, it was very diverse, and we were talking about our languages, usually, trying to convince how difficult our mother tongue is compared to others, haha. It's true regardless of their nationalities, i think.
To me, I don't really believe Japanese is difficult language, because I can speak it, haha. That's how I explained to my friends in NY.
Back to these Japanese who believe Japanese is the most difficult one, i would like to ask them, then how come you are speaking more difficult language, but cannot not do what you call easy language, English, after studying six years at school !!
In order to prove English is easier, you should speak it fluently ! Am I wrong ?

It's me, again....
Chelsea-san's view that trying to put the complicated language into the simple language is more difficult than puting the simple one into the difficult one is very interesting and suggestive.
In doing my translation assignments, I often feel differences between the natures of the two languages. English is straightforward and logical, and Japanese is sensuous and ambiguous. I think these differences come from cultural backgrounds. I don't know how to translate the word like はんなり into English! And besides, Japanese has less strict grammatical structure than that of English so that you can go on and on and on as you think of.
Moreover, there are three kinds of characters in Japanese, namely, hiragana, katakana and kanji. These characters have respective ways to be used. English can be expressed only by 26 symbols, I mean, alphabets.

It seems that my explanation is self-contradictory. "Japanese has less strict structure than that of English" sounds like Japanese being easier than English. Chelsea, you can believe whatever you want to believe, but how many languages have you learned in order to tell our language is one of the most difficulties ones? :-p As I said, Korean language is pretty much similar to ours whose origin is Mongolian language, I heard. And our language is similar to Turkish, Hungarian too. Because they are all based on Mongolian, that's what I heard from a Korean friend, haha.

Another question to you, Chelsea, is which language is more difficult between Japanese and Korean.

I think, as an Engineer, English is a better language to write a specification explaining precise descriptions in details, because it always needs a clear subject and a clear object. In Japanese, these subject or object could be omitted in context, and it could mislead a reader of the document.
And Japanese may be better at poetic articles, like we have 俳句 and 短歌, it's almost impossible to describe what Japanese language can in English. The beautiful 5-7-5-7-7 sounds with full of meaning which haven't fully described in the words... beautiful. We can enjoy that kind of Japanese art because we know Japanese.
Yeah, we have many characters, but Chinese do more. So the Chinese must be the most difficult language in the world for that matter if you insists a language with more characters is more difficult.
Or, because of ひらがな、かたかな、written in Japanese is easy if it's without these 漢字. はなみ is always はなみ, our language can be always written phonetically. but English spelling is not phonetic. "Guitar" has no "u" sound in it, it could have been spelled as "gitar", but it is guitar. Another complications exist in English, right ?
My point is it's no meaning to say Japanese is more difficult than English or you cannot really say it in general. I met lots of people saying Japanese is very difficult language without knowing the things about other languages. I think the most of people saying it are mono-lingual. But ねこ and Chelsea, your English is great, and I am sure you guys are bilinguals :-)

Japanese is fairly easy to me. First of all, YES! I am Korean. and I guess that should be the only good reason :)
Japanese can be really difficult to Americans b/c of difference of culture, and the usage of language, etc.

But I am not quite sure about what you were trying to say bout "bring" and 「持って行く」 thing.
持って行く means "to bring" right ? My dictionary says bring means "come to a place with something or somebody", yeah it is 持って行く、but we dont say 持って行く for bringing a person to that place, but say 連れて行く or 連れてくる。 That's the difference I can see between the two.
