Hollywood starlet Raquel Welch was skinned.
So says Toronto scuba-suit dealer who claims he could have saved her from a "harrowing" experience---and cut the $6 million budget of her latest movie.
Raquel needed a white rubber scuba suit for the science-fiction thriller, "Fantastic Voyage" which is ordinary everyday stuff about some microbe-sized scientists who go for a voyage in a microbe-sized submari
ne.
So instead of trying to pour Raquel into the suit, they poured the suit on her.
"Malarkey." snorted the Tronto dealer.
"All that wasn't necessary. We have suits that fit woman, contours and all, like they had a second skin. Six zippers. Fifty-five to $95, depending on the material and in all colors, Blue, black, yellow stripes."
But back in Hollywood, they apparently hadn't heard the news.
So they put Raquel's five-foot, six-inch, 118-pound frame into a box. Like a coffin.
"They greased all over my leotard with vaseline." recalls Raquel.
"then they put strips of gauze bandage over me from top to toe, back and front."
Attendants poured liquid rubber over Raquel. Then they all went away for a couple of hours to let her harden.
"Finally, two men lifted me out as though I were a mummy." said Raquel. "I felt like one."
They peeled the suit off in sections, heat-welded the sections and put in the zippers.
Of course, if 20th Century-Fox had given Raquel a petty cash voucher for $55 and told her to go downtown and pick up a white rubber scuba suit in her lunch-hour, then none of this would have been written.
And Raquel wouldn't have gotten her name into the papers.
