ABU DHABI ― The name 'Al Gharbia' was the most automatic choice for the Western Region of Abu Dhabi emirate, as it's easy to pronounce, easy to remember and, therefore, easier to promote, Mohammed Azzan Al Mazrouei, Director General of the Western Region Development Council (WRDC), told Khaleej Times in an exclusive interview.
According to a recent official announcement, the Western Region of Abu Dhabi will now be known as Al Gharbia, an Arabic word that means 'the West'.
Al Mazrouei explained to Khaleej Times: "First of all, it's a matter of language. We live in an Arab country and we speak Arabic, not English, so we should have an Arabic name for the region."
The WRDC, which is also going to be called Al Gharbia Development Council shortly, spent nine months of research within the UAE, Gulf, and other countries, before zeroing on the new name.
"We asked the local people about it; we also looked at the most common names for the regions and districts of other countries. Finally, we decided on Al Gharbia. We already use the word in Arabic. When my father, for example, asks me where I am and if I am in the Western Region, I reply Al Gharbia," explained Al Mazrouei. Established in 2006, WRDC has been involved in developing Al Gharbia, which comprises 71 per cent of the entire UAE land. "We work with urban developers, tourism authority, the health, education and transport sectors, and even power companies, to ensure the basic needs to the residents of Al Gharbia," pointed out Al Mazrouei.
"Although the region is seeing huge development, it's not at the expense of the environment. In fact, our motto is that for every tree we are taking out, we are planting another one elsewhere," stressed Al Mazrouei.
"There is much emphasis on green and eco-friendly buildings. If you look at the Sir Bani Yas and Desert Islands projects, they are all based on eco-system protection, with alternative sources of energy like wind turbines and solar panels," noted the WRDC Director General.
On a different level, Al Gharbia is also attracting international attention and visitors throng the region during its cultural festivals. "After the Mazayin Camel Beauty Festival, we will have the Dates Festival in Liwa in July, which will be on an even grander scale than in last year," revealed Al Mazrouei.
