Hi all, just a quick post. Late last year, a new J-RPG was independently published called "Ryuu-Tama" (dragon egg), a "honobono-style" RPG in the likes of the console game Popolocrois, or the TRPG Yuuyake-Koyake. It's a simple adventure game with easy rules, but the art direction and feel is really awesome.
Anyway, I finally got my copies, and I'm really liking what I see. The only problem is that the way things are set up is so different, it's going to take me a while to break into the game. The main thing that I'm trying to crack open like a little linguistic egg is the role of the GM.
The GM is called the "Ryuu-bito" (竜人), and they actually create their own character. This character is a little like the Dungeonmaster from the old Dungeons and Dragons anime from the 1980s: Their character determines what kind of story is going down. Green dragon = adventure and travel. Blue dragon = Honobono, friendships and personal stories. Red dragon = stories of battle and war. Black dragon = Stories of deceit and murder. This alone is awesome.
Looking at the rules, it seems that the Ryuubito's abilities (they also gain levels!) influence the kinds of obstacles that the players face, etc. At the same time, the Ryuubito character *wants* the characters to succeed in their adventures, so it's not like an opponent who wants the PCs to die. And somehow this all fits into the humble mythology of the game.
I'll post more here or at the j-rpg.com/talk blog as I dig into it more. Anyway, it's not all that hard to read, the text is laid out well, so if you're looking for an RPG to use to sink your teeth into practicing Japanese, I'd say go for it. It's 3000 yen.
I'm hoping to have enough of it translated to maybe run an English game of it this coming fall or winter.
If you've seen this game or have flipped through it, feel free to drop your comments in here.
