Crystal Palace director of football Bob Dowie claims that the club are talking to a massive international name about the vacant manager's job.
The position at Palace has been vacant ever since Dowie's brother Iain left to become manager of Charlton, causing a public feud between him and Palace chairman Simon Jordan.
Jordan has already admitted that he is interested in possibly bringing in ex-Newcastle manager Graeme Souness and is set to cut his seven-man short-list down to four this week.
Dowie, who is assisting Jordan in the search for a new manager, said: "We initially drew up a list of seven candidates, all of whom were discussed. One is a massive name from abroad.
"This will be reduced to four, when this is done, we should be in a better position to know who our next manager will be."
IT LOOKS like a four-way race for the Crystal Palace manager's job, writes Chris Fidler.
Hull's Peter Taylor, Luton's Mike Newell and unemployed duo Graeme Souness and Mick McCarthy are all believed to be on Eagles chairman Simon Jordan's shortlist.
Taylor says he won't comment on speculation linking him with Selhurst Park, after the media leaked that he was speaking to Charlton before the Addicks appointed ex-Palace boss Iain Dowie. Taylor said: "I'm not getting involved whatsoever and I don't want another situation like with Charlton."
His chairman at Hull, Adam Pearson, was keen to play the move down when he added: "There's nothing to comment on."
Sources close to McCarthy say the former Sunderland and Republic of Ireland boss would jump at a chance to manage the Eagles, though Derby and Wolves are both trailing him.
McCarthy still lives in Bromley, after refusing to move his family to the northeast while at the Stadium of Light.
Newell, who said he was interviewed by Derby this week, said: "It's just speculation and I don't comment on speculation."
Souness is expected to meet Jordan next week on his return from a holiday.
Jordan said: "Director of football Bob Dowie is drawing me up a shortlist. I want a manager who can take us up next season. The team should have gone up last season but it didn't for a number of reasons."
He added: "Graeme Souness is somebody I would like to see, but there are a number of managers I would like to see."
Jordan says the new boss will be able to spend the £8.6million the club received from Everton for Andy Johnson this week.
